"Today is the day." Said Mary, Sadairah's mother.
"No, no, no." Said Sadairah.
"What's wrong, sugar plum?"
"Don't call me that."
"Why not, airah, airah?"
"Mom."
"Okay, get ready. Your dress is on the hook and I packed your bags."
"Thanks mom."
"Airah?"
"Yeah, mom?"
"I'm proud of you sugar plum."Sadairah gets out of her bed and washes her face. Her deep blue eyes tinted a misty grey; they do this when she is troubled. She washes her hair and slips on her purple dress; the color of her group which os the wisest. She bears a cold scar upon her back from playing too rough as a child. She was climbing a tree with a few of the boys and they continued to taunt her and say she was too slow, so she reached higher and hit and unstable branch and fell down; hitting every branch as she fell. She picks up her two small bags and walks to the door. She checks one more time that she has everything; her mom may be hopeful of her return to the Wisest, but Sadairah was not so sure. Before leaving she slips on her anklet that she made. Of course, she made it in secret, because wearing jewelry was forbidden by all aside form the Vain and the Eldest. The ankle is silver and has a simple charm; the word "Chaos".
"Mom, I'm ready." Sadairah shouts from the porch swing.
"How did you grow up so fast?"
"I'm not sure mom."
"Now, you just try your best, honey. You might get to stay with us."
"Don't get your hopes up, mom."And as she says those last words the bus comes up the drive. Her heart pound, and she regrets the words she just uttered;even though they were probably true. A dozen other kids walk down the line and Sadairah follows. She walks as slowly as she can; savoring everything. Before she exits on to the drive, she tosses a pebble back at her mom; secretly saying that a piece of her will remain at home; with her. Her mom smiles and winks in return; but it is obvious that sh is close to tears.
Sadairah takes a seat next to Auburn, and clutches her small bag close to her. Auburn and Sadairah had been neighbors since they were little, but Sadairah simply couldn't stand Auburn most of the time. Sadairah stared out the window as the bus rolled away; her mother holding her young brother at her side. As she watched her mother fade away with the dust, she felt a small tear escape; she quickly wiped it away. Auburn attempted small talk, but it was pointless. They both know they wouldn't be coming back home.
Each bus pick up the youth from two groups. The Kindest and the Vain share; mostly because though the Vain were pretty unbearable, the Kindest were the only ones with the patience to deal with them. The Survivors get their own bus; probably because most of the City was scared of them and they were pretty reckless. The Wisest and the Deceivers travel on a pale white bus; people believed that the white would scare and youth Deceivers and cause them to calm themselves and not hurt anyone. There have never been any Deceivers, but still every year the bus makes its ten minute stop, waiting.
"Who is that?" Auburn asks as a young girl walks toward the road from the Dark Woods. Their is a girl walking toward the bus; she is wearing a dark dress and black hood which marked her as a Deceiver.
"I don't know." Says Sadairah. The bus stops and just as it does, the Deceiver youth steps aboard. With this, the whole world seems to got silent. Her deep green eyes seem to swallow the light on the bus. She doesn't stare, nor speak, she simply takes a seat at the back of the bus and pulls out a drawing book. She pulls back her hood to reveal a dark mess of black and copper. Sadairah stared at her for a moment; why did this girl look so familiar?
"Stolen from the Vain no doubt." Said Auburn, secretly admiring the book.
"Or an empty scripture book from us." Suggested Sadairah trying to ease her mind as she looked away from the girl. The bus then takes off for its trip to the square. Sadairah watches as the girl lifts the hair from her face and looks out the window and then quickly back to her drawing. Sadiarah stared for just a bit too long and the girl looked up and caught her. She gave a very devious smile and winked before looking back down. Sadairah felt a shiver run down her spine.
Thank God The Bus Stopped...
