Allison portrayed a smile and a certain twinkle in her eyes as she walked into the small flower shop. The bell rang—the same one that indicated every single time somebody had walked through the clear door with a white handle and white flowers decorated on the edge of the door. Allison was in college, studying to be an engineer. Specifically, a technology architecture and management systems engineer. But for now, she worked a part-time job that resided close to Stanford University. It was a 15-minute walk max, but when she first moved to California, Oakland. Her mother gave Allison $10,000 to last her through the first semester and get settled. So she took $3,000 of the money and bought a small convertible. Then it took 5,000 to get a small apartment.

It was a small city, but everything was within walking distance, so Allison was glad that she didn't have to spend so much money out of her weekly paycheck on gas. She bid small and short "how are you?"s to customers as she walked by.  Her co-worker, or best friend, Natasha, was disinfecting the front desk's counter and smiled softly at Allison as she took notice that the girl was inside the building.
"How was your school day?" Natasha asked her best friend as her thick Russian accent pried through her words. "It was okay, Sebastian wasn't being greedy and trying to take other people's money just to get some lunch. Even though it's free, it makes zero sense." Allison rambled absent-mindedly as her lip slipped out to the side of her mouth as she focused on putting the light green apron on. "Sounds wonderful, that kid out of school would get a beating if it was me and my mother and father found out what I was really using the money for." Natasha lectured the kid, who didn't even know she existed.
"Well, it's my hour to go outside and work in the yard. Will you be alright here?" Allison asked her best friend as she tied her light brown hair with white tips into a high ponytail for safekeeping. "I should be, it's close to closing time, so it shouldn't be so busy." Natasha smiled at Allison, then faltered her gaze at another customer coming through the door. And with that, Allison was outside in the fenced yard, where customers who preferred more fresh flowers would go and pick them out. Usually it was certain customers who would come in and get fresh flowers every week, but Allison still made sure the garden was kept as tightly as possible and the flowers were alive.
.
Just as she stood from the crouch she was in, brushing her sweaty hands onto the apron, the gate opened and her gaze averted to the female who walked through. She smiled brightly as the usual customer walked in. Valentina was always coming into the garden exactly at the same time to buy carnation flowers.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite girl in the world." Valentina spoke — her thick Italian accent slipping through —  as she walked closer to Allison, the view of the sun being blocked by Valentina's tall figure.

"Oh, please, you're surely my favorite." Allison spoke softly as the taller girl pulled the smaller girl into a tight hug. "Well, here for your carnations, right? And you haven't been in for a while, is everything alright?" She questioned as she swiftly moved to the garden bed that contained nature's beauty.
"Yeah, sorry for not calling or texting you recently. Things have been hectic at work lately. Benjamin told me you came to the building the other day to see me, and I wasn't there."
Valentina announced this as she watched the girl get the carnations ready. "Well, just call me if you need anything, alright?" Allison spoke softly with concern, coating her words as she handed the flowers to Valentina.
"Of course, are you still coming over tonight?" The taller girl asked as she took the flowers from Allison, then pulled her closer. "Of course I am. See you?" Allison whispered. "See you." Valentina whispered, then walked out of the gate. Then she left, leaving Allison regretting not saying the words she desired to say.
   "I love you."
