Crawfish primarily inhabit freshwater  environments such as streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds. They prefer slow-moving or still waters with plenty of hiding places like rocks, logs, or vegetation. Crawfish are most diverse and abundant in North America, particularly in the southern United States, where they thrive in swamps, marshes, and bayous.
