The Origin of 12 Jyotirlingas
When you close your eyes and think of Lord Shiva, what do you see? Perhaps Shiva, the kind and easy-to-please god, with a crescent moon on his head, a snake around his neck, and dressed in a tiger's skin while meditating. But have you ever wondered why, when we want to worship him, we often turn to the Lingam?
This Lingam has a profound symbolic significance. It is a representation of the formless and infinite nature of Lord Shiva's divine energy. It helps us connect with the idea that Lord Shiva is everywhere, beyond any particular shape or form. It reminds us to focus on the spiritual side of Shiva, not just the physical image. It signifies the unmanifested, abstract aspect of the deity, which is beyond human comprehension
A Jyotirlinga, in Hinduism, is a sacred symbol representing Lord Shiva. It is a powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva's divine energy.
The term "Jyotirlinga" is derived from two words: "Jyoti," meaning light or radiance, and "Linga," which is a symbol or representation of Lord Shiva in the form of a cylindrical or elliptical stone. The Jyotirlingas are believed to be self-manifested.
There are 12 prominent Jyotirlingas scattered across India, each associated with a specific legend and location. Pilgrims and devotees visit these Jyotirlingas to offer their prayers and seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
Did you know how 12 Jyotirlingas came into existence? Let me tell you a simple story from Shiva Purana.
Storytime
Once upon a time, there was a big argument between two powerful Gods, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. They were arguing about who was more important, and their fight got out of control. To settle their argument, Lord Shiva appeared as a huge, shining pillar of light. It was so bright that it stretched endlessly upward and downward, reaching "Triloka- Swarg, Bhuloka, Narak."
Now Lord Shiva set a challenge. He asked Lord Brahma to fly up and find the top of the light, and he asked Lord Vishnu to dig down and find the bottom. Lord Vishnu assumed his "Varaha Avatar" (boar), and Lord Brahma rode a swan (Hansa) to complete this task. Lord Brahma, in a bid to win the argument, lied and said he had seen the end. To prove it, he even brought a ketakī flower, claiming it fell from the end of the light.
Lord Vishnu, being truthful, admitted that he couldn't find the end of the light during his journey. Lord Shiva, who was the shining light, was not happy with Lord Brahma's dishonesty. He got angry and cursed Lord Brahma, saying that he wouldn't be worshipped by people. But Lord Shiva blessed Lord Vishnu, saying that he would be forever worshipped for his honesty.
After this incident, the Jyotirlinga manifested itself in 64 different places on Earth.
And that's how the Jyotirlingas came to be, with Lord Shiva's light appearing in twelve special places. People visit these places to worship Lord Shiva and remember Lord Vishnu's honesty.
