The most recent and unexpectedly, satisfying show that I watched was the anime Charlotte.

I'd seen Charlotte a number of times in a list of Top five sad anime, and if you know me, you know that I love sad anime. I simply cannot get enough of the feels that those tear-jerking anime push through me. However, despite seeing it in a few lists, I didn't know much about the actual storyline, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I wasn't expecting was that I would love it so damn much that it would find a place in my top ten favourite anime.

So, what is Charlotte about?

The MC, Yuu Otosaka, has a special ability that allows him to take over the consciousness of anyone as long as he is that he is looking at them. There are a few flaws to this ability; he can only hold their consciousness for 5 seconds and his own body falls asleep, like literally collapses, for those five seconds.

At the beginning of the show, Yuu is quite a selfish, scheming kind of person and uses his ability to cheat on tests and get people he doesn't like beaten up. But all of his antics soon put him in the spotlight of a small group of other abilitied people who are on the lookout for others like them in order to enrol them into their school and keep them safe from a facility that is also tracking down abilitied people.

Yuu, reluctantly, takes on a position in their group and goes about helping to recruit other abilitied people while slowly building a friendship with his new classmates. We soon learn that the story is a lot more than just a slapstick comedy, and along the way, Yu develops into an absolute, selfless hero – such a contrast to how he started the show.

What did I like about Charlotte?

Firstly, it's charmingly funny.

The abilities that some of the characters have are more deserving of the name oddity than superpower. They sound cool upfront, but they almost all come with some kind of flaw, like the fact that Yuu is rendered immediately unconscious when he switches bodies. Even as Yu meets more people with abilities, he often remarks how they had found someone with yet another 'half-assed ability'.

There is the secondary character/love interest whose ability allows her to become invisible, but only to the one person she chooses. This means while that one person may not be aware of her presence, everybody else can plainly see her which is something that had gotten her into trouble in the past.

Another character can teleport, well, he calls it teleportation, but it looks more like he's simply moving at super speed. The problem this particular character has is that he can't stop when he gets to where he wants to go, and this results in a lot of injuries as he usually ends up slamming into nearby walls and things like this.

Secondly; yes, you guessed it, it's the characters.

I don't want to give any spoilers here, so I won't say much about the characters, but the arc that the main character goes on is more than enough reason to love this show. He develops so much throughout this story and goes from being funny yet annoying to absolutely loveable in so many ways. I felt for him in every part of his journey, and he really lived up to the role of a top MC.

Do I recommend Charlotte?

100%. I cannot think of one flaw in the anime, it has everything I love - comedy, heartbreaking, intrigue and great character development. If you like a deep story about high school heroes, then I am sure you will love this.
