Elizabeth Banks sat down at her kitchen table opposite her son Ian after making them both a cup of tea. He had gone to the Thiwat's barbecue last night and she knew that Phikhuam was going to be there but it seemed that things hadn't gone smoothly.
It broke her heart to see her only son upset like this but she didn't fully understand what the problem was. She had heard him come home during the early hours and had heard him crying in his room but thought it best to give him some space.
Today was Sunday and neither of them had to work so she decided to try and talk to him to see if she could help.
"ok son, tell me what's troubling you and let me see if I can help?" she said.
"it's Phikhuam mum, I know he cares about me but it's like, I'm supposed to just drop everything and do what he wants?"
"I heard you come home early this morning, did you both fight?" she asked.
Ian nodded and tears began to form again.
"do you want to tell me about it?"
"well firstly, I'm pissed off with him because you invited him to stay here with us out of the goodness of your heart and he turned you down as if we weren't good enough, as if staying in an ex council house was beneath him" Ian said offended on his mothers behalf.
"but I didn't take offence sweetie and if you think about it instead of worrying about my feelings you'll see he was right. Kiri and Kan have much better security than us, he wasn't just protecting himself and also us but go on, what else happened dear?" Betty asked.
Ian cast his mind back to the night before when they were back at Kiri and Kan's house after the barbecue then he repeated the conversation to his mother.
The previous night ...
"Ian baby, you're not thinking realistically, you're already a freelance nurse, you could work from anywhere whereas my work is predominantly in Thailand" Phikhuam said.
"right, so I'm supposed to do all the sacrificing because I'm a nobody" Ian replied.
"you're putting words in my mouth" Phikhuam said.
"it's what it pretty much amounts to though isn't it" Ian snapped.
"are you hearing yourself? it's you who seems to have a chip on your shoulder Ian, I'm just trying to suggest the best way forward for us" Phikhuam said.
"no, it's the best way for you, the big shot celebrity that everything and everyone has to revolve around"
"you are being unfair Ian"
"no I'm not, I came on vacation and you saw me and wanted me and played on my emotions so I gave up my holiday for you and now you want me to give up everything, my friends, my mum, my home, I can't speak Thai very well, I won't know anyone ..."
"now you are being way out of line Ian, I did not force you to care for me in Thailand, I asked you and you were paid handsomely for doing so" Phikhuam said.
"so what? I should work for free?" Ian said.
"I didn't say that Ian, you're twisting everything I say"
"no I'm not, Phikhuam wants, Phikhuam gets, isn't that right?" Ian snapped.
"if you believe that, how can you possibly care about me?"
"I think the real question should be do you really like me because it seems to me you're trying to put me in a box of your choosing"
"I'll say it one last time, I'm just trying to be realistic, god how can you be so stubborn!" Phikhuam snapped at Ian.
