Mister Jack shuts the door, sighing annoyed. I hug him tightly, “Thank you...” He chuckles, loosely hugging me back. I turn my face to the side so I can talk, “Mister Jack...?” He responds with, “Hm?” I stay silent for a few seconds before asking, “What is love? And what does it mean when you love someone?”

He sighs before kneeling down to look at me, “I think that’s something you should ask Jason,” he pauses a moment, watching me look to the ground, “however, I doubt he’d tell you, especially after what happened in there, so I’ll tell you.” I look up at him, happiness filling me.

He sighs, laying a hand on my shoulder, “Love is a feeling that you get, but it’s a feeling you get for a certain person.” Puzzled, I tilt my head before he continues, “It’s when  you get that feeling you never want that person to leave your life. You want them to be there with you always, and you would do anything for them. Someone you’d want to be your partner.”

“Oh...But, mister Jack?” I say and he looks at me responding with, “Hm?” I look down at my hands, fiddling with my fingers, “What’s a partner?” He nervously chuckles before speaking, “I really shouldn’t be telling you that one...” I look up at him, “Pleeeaassee, mister Jack~.”

He looks into my eyes for a few seconds before sighing, “Alright. A partner is someone that you’re together with, you know, like, a mommy and daddy, but, they don’t have to be a mommy and a daddy. When two people love eachother very much, they decide to become partners, a couple.”

“Oh.” I say, and he stands, holding his hand out, “Now, let’s go make that tea.” I grasp his hand and he leads me to the kitchen. I grab the kettle, filling it with water before putting it on the stove to heat up. I then reach for the tea box before I feel mister Jack take hold of my wrist, not tightly, but it does stop me. I feel his body press against mine, and I look up at him, “What? Did I do something wrong?”

He shakes his head, “I-” his sentence is cut short by footsteps walking in, and papa sighing angrily while saying something very quietly. Jack releases my arm and walks towards him speaking, “He getting on your last nerve?” I turn to see papa nod before responding, “Yes, very much so. He still thinks-” He sees me, “-Magnolia, dear, could you give us a moment? Go and play in your bedroom.”

“Okay, papa, but would you finish up the tea for me?” He nods, “Of course, darling. Now go play.” I smile and head towards the door, and once I’ve gotten about halfway to my room, I hear papa’s voice, but I can’t make out anything he’s saying. I get in my room, and I close the door behind me, sitting on my bed as Sir Mouseington runs up next to me.

A little bit of time passes before papa walks in with mister Jack. He seems conflicted for a moment before speaking, “Magnolia, dear, I can get that boy to behave, and turn him into your new playmate, but I need to be sure that’s what you want.” He pauses, thinking for a moment, “However, if you say yes, you’ll have to spend some time out of the house, and since you already know Jack, and since you two seem alright and fond of eachother, I trust that you can behave for as long as is necessary for me to teach that boy some manners.”

I stay silent, thinking over my answer very thoroughly, “I...”
