Alexander jerked awake as the car hit a small pothole. "Are you awake again?" asked the orphanage caretaker. Alexander had been an orphan since birth, never knowing his parents. An old man found him on the street and brought him to the orphanage. He lived there until the age of 6, after which he had to attend school. However, for some reason, he couldn't read human writing, leading to his constant expulsion from school."You know this school was the only one that accepted you," his caretaker remarked. Alexander complained, "But I don't want to go to this dreary castle. Why can't I be taught at home?" The car slowly approached a massive, ancient castle, with ravens circling its tall, pointed towers. The entire building was shrouded in eerie fog. After an hour-long drive, they finally arrived. Alexander grabbed his suitcase from the trunk and headed toward the wooden entrance gate. Did the carved demon's head just move? "I'm probably still dreaming a bit," thought Alex and continued. When he reached the grand hall, the director welcomed him. She was a relatively young woman for such an old school. Paintings of mythical creatures adorned the hall, seemingly staring at Alexander. After a brief conversation, the woman led him to his room. To his dismay, he discovered he didn't have a private room but shared it with three other boys. The room was far from clean, with bite and scratch marks on one bed's wall and feathers in another. Alexander chose the only empty bed and started unpacking. As the director left, a handsome young boy suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He had reddish hair styled in a cute middle part, wearing blue jeans and a red sweater. Around his neck, he wore a tooth, likely from a snake. Instead of greeting Alex, he grabbed a pillow and threw it at him. Another hit him from behind. When he looked around, another boy, more like a squirrel than a human, stood there. A third boy lay on a bed, reading. "Thomas, Felix, leave the poor guy alone!" said the reader suddenly. "By the way, I'm Noah. The one with the chain around his neck is Thomas, and the other is Felix. But now we have to hurry; otherwise, we'll be late for dinner." On the way to the dining hall, Alexander saw various animals gliding above him, but they were gone when they arrived. For dinner, they had schnitzel with fries, and then everyone went back to their rooms."So, how's it going here?" Alexander asked Noah. "Well, we're sorted into houses based on our abilities. There are three houses: Fabulas for mythical creatures, Terra for 'normal' animals, and mixtum, which is a mix of both," Noah replied. Alex was confused, "Mythical creatures and normal animals? Mythical creatures don't exist, though." Noah burst into laughter, "That's supposed to be a joke. Haven't you transformed yet? You haven't talked to animals? Some people are called shifters. Signs include being able to talk to animals. You can transform into either a mythical creature or a normal animal. The first transformation usually happens around 13 or so. I, for example, am a kestrel."
