I just got home from my exam. Saying that I'm tired would be an understatement. There is so many numbers running through my head I'm starting to feel like a walking calculator. Only four more exams.
There's a knock on the door, and all my stress disappears when I find Sara behind it, smiling with some food and a coffee. "Hi," she says.
"Hi," I take whats in her hands, placing it on the foyer table and immediately embracing her. I take in her scent, the way her body fits perfectly against mine. Mine. Can't get enough. I pull back just enough to look at her face, brushing away strands of hair. Stunning. I place a hand on cheek and look at her for a second, my stomach twisting in that funny way, before I kiss her softly. I love how normal it is becoming with her. I was happy to take it slow with her, and would have given her as much time as she needs to be comfortable, but I can't lie and say I wasn't dying to touch, hold and kiss her almost constantly.
She hums as I pull away, her eyes fluttering open slowly. "How was the exam?" I grab the food and coffee as we head into the kitchen
"Ask me that same question when I get my degree." I shrug, looking back at the exam and hardly remembering how I got through it. I'm pretty sure I blacked out mid way. There's been so much going on between exams, Lily, and my deep and intense feelings for Sara that have suddenly turned me into a teenage boy who has just discovered girls for the first time. She's entirely consuming. Not that it's a worry, but I'm constantly thinking about her. I want her to be mine. Now. Sara gives a weak laugh, wincing slightly and shutting her eyes. "You okay?" I ask, suddenly worried for both my girls.
With a quick nod, she smiles, but I don't believe it. "Just a headache. That damn dress," she laughs. It sounds tired, and I hate that whatever she's feeling is taking the sparkle out of her honey eyes.
"Anything from the vet?" I ask, my heart quickening its pace.
Sara shakes her head, taking her laptop out of her bag. "Not yet," she says lowly.
I muster all the positivity I can for her sake, walking over to her and pulling her into a tight hug. "They will call soon. It will be okay," I repeat the reassuring line I've been saying since we took Lily to the vet, leaving her there alone. I Donny texted me last night asking how the visit to the vet went with Lily, and I told him every detail, as if he could help. He wished me well and I thanked him. This whole situation is so tough, but as her head rests on my chest, the feeling of her so close, I feel hope and peace. The way she's melting into me makes me want to never let go, to protect her at all costs. I take in her sent, her body against me so perfect, her soft breathing. Perfectly mine.
A knock at the door makes us pull away, but I take her face in my hands once more, planting a soft kiss on her lips. Perfect.
When I open the door, Maddie stands there with a tray of coffee. "I brought coffee," she smiles big, but I can tell it's out of sympathy. Maddie's just as worried about Lily as us, that's obvious, but it's nice of her to be trying to make us feel better.
"Thank you," I say as I step aside. She saunters in and I follow. After hugging Sara tightly, we all take a seat at the table, pulling out our laptops and notebooks.
"So..." Maddie starts. "Er, anything?" I see Sara sigh, and I reach over and grab her hand. It's muscle memory now, I can't help it.
Just as Sara is about to speak, her phone goes off in the middle of the table. It reads "GUELPH ANIMAL HOSPITAL," making us all give interchangeable looks to one another, wide eyed and I swear I hear our erratic heartbeats from where I sit. Sara fumbles for the phone, Maddie and I both getting up to stand next to her. She answers, putting it on speaker and instantly speaking. "Is she okay?!" It's sort of a scream, but it captivated what were all feeling.
