Prologue
August 8, 2008
I often lay awake thinking at night, when my dad is asleep, if I knew how everything was going to turn out, if I would've went to the bar that night. Would I give up a rare and beautiful love, to avoid so much pain, if I had to do it over again?
And if there was a magical wand that could illuminate all the major events in my life-to know what's to come-is it worth what I had to give up? Is it worth losing my sanity when he first left, or even possibly dying when he came back?
From the time we're born, we trust what we're told to be true by the ones we love. But what if the truth is that we can't always trust the ones that we love, the ones we thought would never hurt us?
They say a small town is safer than a big city, and this may be true in most cases. I lived in two major cities, New York and London, but I never felt as safe here in this small town, as I did there. The one person that made me feel safe in cities filled with millions, is the same one who now haunts me in a city of only twenty thousand.
LaPorte is a sleepy little town where the dead bolts are seldom engaged. It's a town where everyone comes together in times of need. A type of place, that if you go to the local coffee shop by seven in the morning, you'll find the police chief sitting at a table with the city accountant and attorney, welcoming you as you walk in, then quickly back to talking about the game on Friday night.
Even though I live here where nothing bad really ever happens, except the occasional gossip over someone's misfortune, I still feel so incredibly lost without him. Safety is something I only used to know. The only thing I have left to hold onto is my dad, and Dean. It's only because of them I'll wake up tomorrow morning. I have to, I promised my dad.
It is a safe place for most people. A type of place where you can trust everyone to be who they say they are-or so I thought.
