There was soft music playing in a dimly lit room hosting a girl as she sat at the edge of her bed. Her eyes wide and unable to blink as she stared at her blistered feet. She could almost see the permeate imprint of the plastic platforms that she slipped on almost every damn night. She was tired and worn. Yet what could she do? She was fully aware of her situation and the inability she cursed herself with. How would her family react to the news of what she does for work? Did they know that sending her to a better country for a better life would end her up in a strip club?

She pondered this every second of every day wearing her down more and more.

As a child she was always aware of her beauty. Growing up alone forced her to spend much time in the mirror. She envied the popular girls in her school, with their hairless long legs, pretty eyelashes, soft voices, clean clothes, and packed lunches. She was always jealous hearted as well. Growing up a poor kid having to wash and dry her uniform in the backyard even in the harsh winter when her clothes would simply freeze. She was envious of the luxury other kids had of my having to go dumpster diving just to score a half eaten beef patty and days old carton of milk almost or sometimes inhabited by bugs and other dumpster dwellers.

Jealous was a strong word but her hatred was even stronger. It's not that she hated rich people. She was aware that most parents worked hard to provide better lives for her children, however her parents did too. Like all kids dealt with the lesser hand, Knox studied hard. From stealing her classmates' school supplies to loitering around in the campus library. She promised herself that she'd move out of Barbados and live in America pursuing her dream of working as a surgeon.

Yet here she was staring at her feet on her off day thinking about how she'd have to go back to work again as a stripper who flunked out of college before she was even enrolled.

She sighed a bit, breaking the relentless contact with her toes and stood from the bed. Her eyes shifted to the door now as she began to walk through it aiming for the front door. The pounding on her door was growing louder and louder before she pulled the wooden slab closer to her eliminating the noise.

There stood two officers looking down on her as a vulnerable piece of prey they could save for later to feast upon. She shrunk in her body as the bald officer handed her a slip.

"Is this the residence of Knox Green?" He asked his eyes glued to her chest poking out of her thin white shirt. She snatched the paper folding her arms over her breasts smashing them down.

"Yes this is she." She sneered.

The cop didn't pay her attitude no mind as he continued to blatantly undress her with his eyes "You have been served with an eviction notice. You have three days to pack and move from this unit or you will be charged with illegal trespassing."

Her eyes almost popped out of her head as he stomach fell "What? Why?"

The cop with short brown curly hair spoke up this time moving his gaze from her legs to her face "The information should be on the paper. However you would get an extension for a day if you let us see what's under that top."

She rolled her eyes now pulling the door into her grasp "Suck a dick."

She slammed the door back in their faces, locking it and sighing once more.

"Fucking New York cops..,Pigs."

This wasn't her first time having an encounter with the cops like this. As a matter of fact it happened quite often. At the club there's always a fight breaking out and the cops are always like kids at a candy store ogling over the girls instead of doing their jobs. The girls always chatter amongst themselves how they neve feel truly safe. It's like every man that they encounter in their lives instantly values them as an object before even knowing their profession. Knox calls it a scent, there's a certain smell to women whose lives are significantly harder than others. She feels like she reeks.
