THE CULLENS WERE IN NEW YORK. Specifically, Ithaca, New York. It felt like Forks except there wasn't much rain and it was more lively. They wanted to believe it was like Forks because they missed the boring, rainy town, but it wasn't. Edward had run off to Italy since he needed to go off by himself for a while and think. He missed being with Bella — he hated knowing he now had to stay away from her forever... For her and his family's safety.
Alice and Jasper were taking night walks together every night in the town since there were pretty lights and not many people to keep Jasper from going crazy. And since Alice was there, she'd be able to stop bad occurrences from happening before they happened due to her being able to look into the future.
Emmett was okay with having no mate because he had his best friend, Rosalie. He loved hanging out with her and going to several sports games with her when she initially didn't like it as much as he did. He followed her around when she wanted to go shopping for clothes or help her fix up old cars. Or even doing his thing by himself, he didn't mind it. Sure, he'd think it'd be great for him to find his mate, but he didn't care for it since he had his family to annoy. But with Rosalie, she felt much differently.
Not that Rose didn't like hanging around Emmett because she did — he was her best friend, and she loved him. But she wanted somebody to kiss and love more than just a friend, and Emmett was the one for her like that. When she found Emmett as a human and brought him home, she thought he could be her mate... But he wasn't. She didn't feel that spark. It was more of a younger brother and big sister bond than anything romantic.
She hated seeing Esme and Carlisle, Alice and Jasper being a couple and doing cute things together when she craved that intimacy and lovingness. Maybe that was just another reason why she didn't like Bella and had a slight grudge over Edward because he found love and she loved him back. They'd die for each other — Bella wants to turn into a vampire and be immortal, to be with the guy she's only known for such little time and stay with him forever. It infuriated Rosalie. She didn't understand why Bella would want to just give up her life so easily and with almost no thought.
