The corridors of the English and Cultural Studies department resonated with the enthusiastic voices of fresh faces, marking the arrival of a new cohort of 1BAENG students. These were first-year scholars, their eyes gleaming with curiosity and hailed from all corners of India. From Mumbai's bustling streets to Meghalaya's serene hills, the classroom was a microcosm of the nation's diversity.
Though their backgrounds may have been diverse, they all shared a sincere passion for the written word, languages, and the vibrant tapestry of cultures. Each class session became an odyssey into the realms of human experience as they delved into literary landscapes and explored the boundless facets of culture.
With the passing weeks, their interactions deepened, fostering a sense of camaraderie among these budding scholars. They exchanged stories of their families, dreams, and personal struggles, realizing that, despite their differences, they had found a community within the department. Their journey had commenced in July, and, like the characters in the stories they loved, they had already experienced growth and transformation.
They formed study groups to navigate the academic challenges, ventured on field trips to enrich their cultural understanding, and immersed themselves in literature and its profound influence on society. The diverse backgrounds of the 1BAENG class have set the stage for some remarkable and unique stories.
Now, the time had come to peel back the layers of their individual stories, to unearth how their pasts had shaped them and, in turn, how they were shaping their futures.
Once upon a time, a small boy named Shyam lived in the lush green hills of Shillong. He was a dreamer who believed literature was a world filled with roses and colours. He imagined it was a realm where words danced on the pages like vibrant brushstrokes on a canvas. But Shyam would soon discover that English literature was more than just an artistic tapestry; it was a mirror reflecting the complexities of life.
In his early years, Shyam had his heart set on becoming a doctor. However, his dreams were momentarily dashed when he encountered a formidable obstacle in the form of an English class during eighth grade. The subject he had always seen as an ornate garden of expression became a thorny path littered with grammar rules and baffling syntax. It was then that Shyam embarked on a journey that would change the course of his life.
Desperate to bridge the chasm between his dreams and his academic struggles, Shyam enrolled in English tuition classes. Little did he know that his tutor would turn out to be none other than his class teacher. She was a nurturing soul, a guardian of the English language, and she recognized the spark in Shyam's eyes. With her guidance, he delved deep into literature, learning that English literature wasn't just about whimsical imagination but a potent combination of fantasy and realism.
With her support and encouragement, Shyam's love for English grew like ivy on a wall. He realized that literature wasn't just stories and poems but a reflection of the human condition. He understood words on the page carried the weight of history, culture, and society. They were a conduit to the minds and hearts of past and present authors.
Shyam's conviction grew more vigorous as he progressed through his academic journey. He firmly believed that any text, whether an age-old classic or a modern internet meme, held a place in the tapestry of literature. And so, the boy who once thought of literature as a bed of roses had transformed into a man who understood it was a vast garden of diverse blooms, each with its unique beauty and significance.
As Shyam embarked on a new chapter of his life in Bangalore, leaving the serene hills of Shillong behind to pursue an undergraduate degree in English literature, he felt the winds of change blow through his world. The transition from the east to the south was quite a transformation.
The differences were striking. In Shillong, the school would conclude by 2:30 - 3:00 p.m., leaving plenty of time for leisure and family. Now, in college, the days stretched until 4 p.m. By the time Shyam completed assignments and other academic responsibilities, it was often close to 10 p.m. before he returned to his paying guest accommodation. This new routine was taking a toll on his body, and some days felt like a test of endurance. As he navigated this unfamiliar landscape, Shyam reflected on the comforts he had taken for granted back home. Simple things like a leisurely dinner with his family or watching TV together were now considered luxuries. The hustle and bustle of city life left little room for such cherished moments. Shyam missed his family deeply, and their absence was keenly felt in these moments of solitude.Yet, despite these significant changes, Shyam displayed remarkable resilience. He admitted, "My way of adjustment has been smooth." His mindset was a testament to his adaptability. He firmly believed he had no option but to adjust to this new reality. This unwavering determination helped him find his footing in a world so different from the one he had known. Shyam was on a journey of self-discovery, a trip that would not only shape his academic pursuits but also his character as he continued to navigate the twists and turns of life in Bangalore.Amid the busy classes, long nights, and missing home, Shyam realized that his journey from Shillong to Bangalore was just one part of his ongoing story. He felt a sense of belonging in the 1BAENG class, a group of dreamers like him. As they started sharing their stories, it was evident that this class was a place where dreams thrived, and their diverse backgrounds would come together to create a brighter future.
