Today was a holiday. It was Christmas Eve. Sugawara sat out the balcony, taking soft sips from his beer as he thinks about various things like what he's going to decorate the classroom with when the new semester will start, or getting up and jumping off the balcony. He looked down at his feet, staring absent-mindedly. His usual bright expression replaced with that of a face that showed calmness, yet sadness.
Daichi slid open the door and sat beside Sugawara, setting out two bowls of spicy mapo tofu in front of them. Daichi presented them with a smile, and gently lifted Suga's face for a brief second with his finger. A smile was plastered on his lips-a smile that was so innocent, so happy, and so pure, it made Suga's eyebrows slightly knit.
"Let's eat." Daichi said with his voice soft and calm, just sounding as if nothing in the world mattered.
"...Let's eat." Suga muttered with his lips softly tugging up, forming a small smile. He thanked for the food, and began to eat. The spicy taste of the tofu danced on his tongue the moment he took a bite. It made him feel a little alive. Daichi liked seeing Suga enjoying things-or just being happy in general-because seeing that signature bright smile resting on his face is slowly becoming a rare sight.
Daichi was looking out to the city when Sugawara announced something.
"I'm full."
Daichi turned to see Sugawara's bowl half empty. He usually finished his food, so it got Daichi curious, and worried.
"You're full?" Daichi repeated as a question, hoping Sugawara would change his mind and decide to finish the food. But as much as he hoped for that to happen, Sugawara did the exact opposite.
The silver-haired shook his head with a small smile, as if saying 'don't worry'.
Sugawara shook his hand in a dismissive way. He walked out, without even saying a word. Daichi's mind immediately raced, his brows knitting for a moment. He looked down at Suga's bowl only to discover that he only ever took just a few bites.
He wanted to see if Suga was okay. Maybe he's just stressed out from being a pre-school teacher, I mean, dealing with kids and toddlers almost all week will definitely make you lose energy, right? Daichi wanted to look into the bright side. But despite the attempts to better the situation, he knew well what Suga was going through.
Sugawara was met with a great wave of loneliness the moment he left. The only comfort that he has right now—the bed. Sitting down and staring into space, be thought of what would happen if he just did it. If he had just...jumped earlier. Even at just the thought of Daichi having to attend his funeral made Suga's heart shatter.
Shaking his head again to dismiss the painting thoughts, he scooted to the corner and pressed his knees to his chest, curling up as he slept the sadness away. Even when resting, he couldn't help but think: would he really attend my funeral? If I survived, would he visit me?
He drifted off to sleep thinking of the time he and Daichi had spent together; the happy memories turning bittersweet.
On the other hand, Daichi was left with two bowls of tofu. He didn't know what to do with them. His eyes darted to Sugawara's bowl to the empty spot that he had taken back and forth, imagining how it would've been more heart warming if Suga didn't leave. He doesn't want him to leave, ever. After losing sight of Sugawara, he was always scared that he'll never come back.
Daichi quickly ate his food. Leaving Suga's left overs in the fridge, he went to look around the house and find him. Finding the man on the bed, curled up and against the wall, it made Daichi worry even more.
He closed the lights. He laid beside his boyfriend. He wrapped an arm around him. And with a sweet, tender voice...
"Goodnight, Koushi... Tomorrow is another day..."
Gently kissing Sugawara's forehead one last time, he let himself drift off into dreamland where he could experience the sweet feeling of eating dinner with Sugawara, where he never leaves and stays alive and smiling.
