if minji had to choose which season represented her girlfriend the best, she'd choose autumn in a heartbeat.
it was a crisp fall evening, and the warm glow of street lamps filtered through the curtains in minji and haerin's cozy living room. the scent of pumpkin spice candles filled the air as they spread out newspaper on the coffee table, ready to start their annual halloween tradition.
haerin, with her sleeves rolled up, couldn't hide her excitement. she selected the perfect pumpkin from the ones they'd bought together earlier that day.
minji grinned as she watched her girlfriend inspect each pumpkin carefully. the older girl loved how the cat-like girl's eyes sparkled with excitement whenever she was enthusiastic about something.
"found the one?" minji teased.
the younger girl rolled her eyes at her lover's teasing, but her smile remained on her face. "yes, min, i think i've got the competition in the bag this year." haerin replied, setting the mid-sized pumpkin onto the table and running her fingers over the smooth, orange surface.
minji moved closer to haerin, resting her hands on her girlfriend's waist, an action that didn't go unnoticed by the younger and didn't fail to give her the butterflies whenever minji would do so.
"i thought we weren't doing a competition this year, rinnie?" minji pressed a kiss to haerin's forehead.
the younger girl closed her eyes, relishing the gentle affection her girlfriend was giving her. "c'mon, unnie, a little friendly competition never hurt anyone."
haerin opened her eyes and looked up towards minji with her big, pleading cat eyes.
"please, unnie?"
with a sigh and a small nod, minji agreed, drawing absentminded patterns on the younger girl's waist.
haerin knew exactly how to make the older girl fold for her.
the cat like girl's lips curved into a cheshire smile, "thank you, min!" planting a quick peck onto the taller girl's lips.
"just don't get mad if i beat you again this year babe."
haerin playfully hit minji's arm, "not this year, unnie, i'm sure of it."
minji retracted her arms from haerin's waist, moving away to bring her own pumpkin onto the coffee table.
"do you wanna play music while we do this, rinnie?" minji asked, already scrolling through their shared playlist on spotify.
haerin watched minji scroll through her spotify with a fond smile, appreciating her girlfriend's enthusiasm. "yeah, just choose one for now then put it on shuffle play."
minji nodded, and after a few more seconds of scrolling she settled on my love mine all mine by mitski.
haerin snorted at her lover's choice of song, she had been repeating the song non stop since 3 days ago because the younger girl once mentioned in conversation that she liked the song. "mitski again, really?"
minji only replied with her usual charming grin accompanied with a shrug from her shoulder. "the song hits, what can i say?"
now, haerin did go on her phone quite a bit, but not nearly as much as her girlfriend did, so what minji did next threw her off.
"what can i say? what can i say? WHAT CAN I SAYY"
the older girl repeated while moving her hands back and forth in an L shape.how was it possible for haerin to be so in love with such a complete loser?
"oh my god, i need to limit your screen time, love."
"babe, it was hanni, i swear."
haerin burst out into a small fit of giggles at minji's actions, "let's just start carving our pumpkins, min."
-
an hour passed the couple by quickly, their pumpkins taking on distinctive forms.
"rinnie, are you almost done?" minji asked her girlfriend, since she was basically done with hers.
"almost min, just making the mouth bigger" haerin replied as she continued working diligently on her own carving.
"ah, i'll wait for you to finish then" the older girl smiled at the younger.
after slicing away at the pumpkin a few more times, haerin looked up to meet minji's eyes. "i'm done," the cat-like girl announced with a satisfied smile.
"on the count of three, let's face our pumpkins towards each other." the older girl suggested.
haerin simply nodded, waiting for her lover to start the count.
"1." haerin set down the carving knife onto the newspaper.
"2." the younger girl placed her hands onto the sides of the pumpkin, ready to turn.
"3." the couple turned their pumpkins around at the same time, revealing their designs.
minji's eyes crinkled in adoration once she saw the shorter girl's design of choice. it was ghostface, a character from one of their shared favourite movie films.
haerin smirked at the taller girl's reaction, "told you i was winning this year's competition."
minji moved towards her girlfriend, smiling at her affectionately, "yeah, no, you definitely won this year's pumpkin carving contest."
pressing another kiss to her girlfriend's forehead, minji praised haerin, "you did amazing, haerin."
haerin looked up to meet her minji's gaze. without missing a beat, the younger girl planted a sweet, loving kiss on the older's lips, murmuring, "as much as i love pumpkin carving, you're my favourite part of autumn, minji."
minji's heart swelled with affection as she responded back, "and you're my favourite part of every season, haerin."
minji might have lost this pumpkin carving contest, but won in the end knowing she had haerin's love and devotion all to herself.
