Campfire Embers

(Gender neutral)

Prologue
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
It was a long day of clearing out nearby hilichurl camps around Mondstadt. You and Amber wandered far off chasing a glorious sunset. However, it was getting late, the both of you far from the gates of Mondstadt. After some talk, it was decided you'd camp out for the night. You just begun to set up a makeshift tent. Now all that was left was the campfire.

*YAwn*. . .

You stretched your arms far behind you, angling your back to ease your sore muscles. Hilichurls aren't that big of a deal to you, but in numbers, they can get tiring. Assigned by acting grandmaster Jean, you, and Amber we're to remove the Hilichurls and their camps away from Mondstadt grounds. It was long and tiring. The sun's rays that once shun brilliantly in the sky, have now retreated in solitude.

*PUUT BANG CLANK!* You'd smack the rock repeatedly into the nail. Its metallic chimes filled the open air with a disturbing melody.

You tugged on the cloth that was bound to the ground by the nail. Once the cloth stayed firm, you concluded your job was done.

Hearing the sound of rustling leaves and grass, you turned around. Two tiny red ears emerged from the bush. One may assume these ears must belong to a weird bunny of some kind. After closer inspection, it was just Amber's headpiece that made her LOOK like a bunny. You called out for her. She sprung her head up with a smile, and in her hands was a generous heap of dry wood.

The wood rolled about as Amber dropped them in a pile. Then, bending down, she assorted the woods together. You didn't leave far from her, going in the same spot she was for some thick logs. With your feet, you lightly shoved on the logs. The logs were rolled till they were an even distance between the campfire.

Once Amber was done, she placed her hand at the base of the sticks. Using her pyro elemental, she lit small flames around the bundle. It wasn't long before the fire spread around the whole bundle of sticks. Small embers of flame danced as they trickled in the air.

The warmth of the fire touched and cradled your face. It was like warm and graceful hands held your cheeks softly. The glow of the fire in Amber's eyes reminded you of the sunset you had seen moments ago. Its firey flare, how it changed from yellow to orange, to this fierce yet elegant red. The sun angled in the clouds just right to form small rainbows around it. Although exhausted, climbing the top of Starsnatch Cliff was worth the view. It was worth the view reflected in her eyes. It was-

"Mmnnph- (Y/N)? Nommp- Youmm Wamt some?"

You were guided away from your thoughts. You gaze up to see Amber giving you a smile through stuffed cheeks. In her hand was a large bag of marshmallows.

"Since when did you have this?" you questioned. You accept the bag from her, but not before she digs her hand in there to grab another marshmallow.

"Hee hee~ As an Outrider for the Knights of Favonius, I must always come prepared!" She said with a smirk as she plucked the marshmallow into her mouth.

You roll your eyes with a chuckle. You grab a long twig from within the flames. Brushing the charcoal and dirt remains off, you break it in two, then hand one to Amber. You then stick your marshmallow onto the stick's end. Amber copies you, placing her marshmallow on her stick as well. Then you both descend your sticks to hover above the flames.

You were both quiet as your marshmallows grilled. The cracking of the fire calmed your soul. The wind's gentle breeze in the trees, the soft smokey scent of the campfire, and Amber's warming presence filled your heart with warmth.

You gave a soft hum in content. Suddenly Amber piqued up. "So uh...(Y/n)...whatcha thinking about!" Amber asked.

You hummed in response as you thought. If you told the truth, it'd only be a lie.

"Just relaxing, you know, taking in the atmosphere." you lied, though you told the truth.

Amber humed in response, thinking of what to say. "Do you have any plans for when we return to Mondstadt?" she questioned.

"I'll give Jean a full report on our finding. Afterward, I guess I could return to training to refine my skills." For a moment Amber gave you a face like you'd said something wrong...Like you had missed the point of something she was trying to say.

She cleared her throat "Oh, I- Ahem...I meant, outside of work..." She responded. You know, if you have any plans...because-" she twirled a lock of hair around her finger, and swayed her feet lightly. "Because I mean...you know...erm...Mondstadt is holding this small two-day festival. It would mean a lot to me if you- I mean if you could-"

Flustered she pouted her cheeks and crossed her arms. She mentally punished herself for stammering on words she had practiced for about an hour now.

Suddenly, a warm hand was on her shoulder. Your soft gaze wandered in her flame-lit eyes.

"Of course, I'll go to the festival with you."

Amber smiled widely at your response, restraining herself from letting out a high-pitched scream. You didn't move away from Amber immediately, in fact, it seemed you two were somehow closer. The intimate desire filled your heart and lungs, and without thinking, you suddenly moved closer.

Just then you heard a small fire engulfing something. You and Amber turned to the source, only for Amber to give a loud Eek!

Bringing the stick to her lips, Amber blew ferociously onto her now charred Marshmellow. Amber whimpered as her marshmallow was burnt to a crisp. Reluctantly, she still ate the marshmallow.

Her headband perked up and stars clouded her eyes in excitement.

"Hey! This doesn't taste bad at all! It's crunchy on the outside with a smokey taste, but on the inside is a liquid gooey masterpiece!" She beamed.

You could only stare in awe at her cuteness, before giggling along with her.

A lot has changed since you saw Amber near the gates of Mondstadt.

But her cheerful personality and the firey embers in her heart shone just as brightly as when you first met her.
