I sat in class listening as the teacher talked about the Sanderson sisters. My sisters. I had been through a lot in the last three hundred years, never aging caused people to get suspicious of me so I had to move around constantly. I lived with Thackery and Emily Binx's parents until they died.
I sat across from Allison, who was just as into this witch stuff as anybody who lived in Salem.
"Poor Thackery Binx, neither his father nor his mother, nor anyone else ever knew what became of him those 300 years ago." The teacher said.
'That's not true! I know what has become of him!' I wanted to shout out, but my sisters had placed a curse on me, forbidding me to ever say what had become of Thackery or that I was related to the Sanderson sisters.
"And so, the Sanderson sisters were hanged by the Salem townsfolk and young Ella, who was said to have been the next victim of the Sanderson sisters was saved. Now there are those who say on Halloween night, a black cat still guards the old Sanderson house, warding off any who might make the witches come back to life!" The teacher said before throwing a piece of fabric at an unsuspecting girl, causing her to jump and let out a scream. The rest of the class laughed, including me.
"Gimme a break," The new boy, Max Dennison who sat in front of me, said.
"Aha, we seem to have a skeptic in our midst, Mr. Dennison would you like to share your California laid back tye dye point of view?" The teacher asked.
"Okay," Max said, "Granted that- uh, you guys here in Salem are all into these black cats and witches and stuff."
"Stuff?" The teacher said shocked.
"I mean, everyone here knows that Halloween was invented by the candy companies," Max said, "It's a conspiracy theory."
"It just so happens that Halloween was based on the ancient feast called all Hallow's eve," Allison said.
"Yeah," I spoke up, "It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts, witches, and evil spirits."
Everyone clapped for Allison and I and we smiled and high-fived each other, smirks on our faces.
"Well said Nora and Allison!" The teacher applauded them.
Max stood up and walked over to Allison, "Well in case Jimi Hendrix shows up tonight, here's my number," He handed her a piece of paper.
The bell rang and Allison and I got up and began to walk home. I had been staying with Allison for the past five years, using the excuse that my parents had moved and left me behind, and we have been best friends ever since.
"Allison, Nora!" Someone called from behind, we turned to see Max, "Hi, look, um, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to embarrass you in class."
"You didn't," Allison spoke, "I didn't care and I'm sure Nora didn't either." I nodded.
"My name is Max Dennison," He stuck out a hand to Allison. He and I had already met a few days ago when I was taking a walk.
"Yeah, I know, you just moved here," Allison said.
"Yeah, last week," Max said.
"Must've been a big change for you," Allison said.
"Yeah that's for sure," Max said.
"You don't like it here?" Allison questioned.
"No, the leaves are great, but I don't know. Just all this Halloween stuff."
"You don't believe in it?"
"What do you mean, like the Sanderson sisters? No way."
Strike one. I thought knowing how much Allison loved Halloween.
"Not even on Halloween?" Allison asked.
"Especially not on Halloween." Max said.
"Trick or treat," Allison said giving him back his piece of paper with his number.
Allison and I walked away laughing and talking about how annoying Max was.
"Are we on candy duty again this year?" I asked Allison as we walked back to our house.
"Yup," Allison said popping the p.
It was super boring just handing out candy, but at least we got to see the little kids costumes.
