'Here we go.' I thought nervously, approaching the downed dragon.

I made my way over to it slowly and carefully, making sure not to make any noise that would alert the beast of my presence. However, luck was not on my side as somehow, on almost every other step I took, I managed to step on an old leaf or a twig and end up making a horrible crunching sound.

'Danm it, why are there so many leaves and twigs here?' I thought, mentally cursing to myself.

'It's a forest you, worthless idiot of course there's going to be twigs and leaves everywhere. What you need to do is stop being your usual useless self for five minutes and stop stepping on every danm leaf and twig you come across.' I thought, cursing myself for my stupidity.

Miraculously, I was able to make it all the way to the dragon without once alerting it of my presence. This is very strange as dragons are supposed to have heightened senses and should have been easily able to detect me with all the noise I was making.

'Oh man, don't tell me it's...' I thought anxiously, my heart filled with dread as I knelt down next to the motionless creature.

Hesitantly, my whole body shaking in terror, I reached out to touch the beast. Slowly, my hand came closer and closer to its body until finally my hand made contact. It was strange touching a dragon. Its body was rough, dry, and scaly, but it also held a comforting warmth. One that I had never felt before.

'It's...it's so warm.' I thought, closing my eyes.

'Does this mean... Does this mean it's alive?' I thought the rest of my body unconsciously getting closer to the dragon, wanting to feel more of its warmth.

I lay my head next to where I thought its heart would be and heard the sound of a gentle thumping. It played to a calm and peaceful rhythm. Bump, bump. Bump, bump. It was the creature's heartbeat. It was alive! A sense of relief washed over my body. I was over the moon! I wasn't a killer! I know it's ridiculous. I mean, it's a dragon! A heartless cold-blooded killing machine, but still, I was happy that I didn't kill it. I don't know why, but even the thought of causing pain to others, even beasts like these, makes me physically ill. I mean, I can't even kill a fly! Every time one gets into the house, I always just chase it out the window instead of killing it like a normal person. I can't eat meat either because it used to be a living breathing creature that was slaughtered, skewered, set aflame, and then placed on your plate, and they just expect you to eat it?

I just couldn't do it! I understand that it's the circle of life and that it's just the way the world works, and I accept it. Even use to take part of it myself because it's normal and just the way things are but imminently stopped cold turkey after a very traumatic incident occurred when I was ten years old. But that doesn't matter now. What matters is that the dragon is alive! Wait a .... the dragon is alive. The dragon is alive! THE DRAGON IS ALIVE!!! I opened my eyes and saw the dragon leering down at me. I stayed completely still for a minute, mentally freaking out before I finally came to my senses.

"It's alive!" I shouted, imminently backing away from the creature.

I scrambled back trying to get back on my feet, but my legs were shaking too much, so I ended up scooching backwards on my hands and feet like a crab until my back ended up colliding with a nearby tree. I jumped in surprise before relaxing, realizing that it was just a tree I ran into. I sighed, relived that it wasn't a dangerous forest animal or worse, another dragon. Without thinking, I threw myself behind the tree, thankful now more than ever, for my skinny twig of a body. I fit behind it almost completely. I put my hand over my chest and take deep breaths, trying to calm myself down and stop my heart from beating right out of my chest. I took in a deep breath, held it in for two seconds, then released my breath, taking no more than six seconds. I repeated this process for about a minute or two until I felt my breathing return to normal, and my heart started beating regularly again.
