Chapter Nineteen

With my bo staff back in hand I crept into the hallway. This was gonna be awkward if it ended up just being Lacey getting some water. But something at the back of my mind told me to be ready and so I was. Other than the earlier creak, the house was eerily silent. I reached the threshold of the living room and stopped. At first, I saw nothing, but then I noticed the way certain parts of the room were darker than they should be. Spots on the wall, that even in the dark, I should have been able to see a picture frame. My house had been invaded.

At the last second, I noticed a shadow to my right. It seemed to notice that the doorway was no longer empty. I quickly slammed my staff sideways up into its head. I tried to catch it but it landed with a thud. I quickly dropped to my stomach as the living room erupted with gunfire. Mom was not going to be happy about those bullet holes. Flashes of barrels lit up the room in spurts. I sprinted forward as bullets narrowly missed me, I tackled a Yellow Jacket near the kitchen door before he could shoot me. I grabbed a knife from his belt and quickly threw it across the room at a thug near the front door.  He fell with a yelp as it impaled his shoulder. There were still at least 4 more. I dived into the kitchen to avoid the hail of bullets.

Using all my weight I pushed the fridge in front of the door and then quietly slipped out the back door. I ran around the side of the house and peered inside my mom's bedroom window. It was dark, so I tried Lacey's next. My stomach dropped at the sight. Her light was on allowing me to see both Lacey and our mom tied up and a little bruised, with two Yellow Jackets standing guard. They were facing away from the window, probably expecting me to come through the door. Lacey's eyes widened when she caught sight of me. I raised a finger to my bandana and then very carefully slid the window open. With the window open I could hear the two guards conversation.

"Ya think the boss man got him?" one said. I froze. BlackJacket was here?

I shook off my shock and slowly climbed into the room. I stepped forward and then heard a crinkle. I had stepped on an empty bag of hot fries. I glared at Lacey as if she betrayed me.

"What the hell," one of the guards said as they turned around.

I quickly grabbed a perfume bottle off the vanity next to me and threw it at his face. His nose crunched at the impact and he fell to his knees. The other one was pulling out his pistol, so I quickly knocked it out of his hand with my staff and then hit him hard across the face with it. The other one seemed to be recovering from his broken nose, so I punched him in the face again. I cringed at the sound, but I needed to make sure he stayed down. With both guards down for the count, I cut the zip ties restraining my family.

"Please, you have to save my son, he's still in there," my mom begged me.

"He's safe, I already got him out," I lied. I heard the door swing open behind me.

"It's not good to lie to your mother," BlackJacket said from behind me.

"Allen?" Lacey asked. A look of realization hit both their faces. I resigned myself, there was no good way to keep my identity a secret anymore.

"BlackJacket, you shouldn't have attacked my family," I growled.

"Your family? It's my family boy," He laughed. What?

"Lincoln, I told you never to come back here!" My mother shouted. I turned to my mom confused. What was happening? Wait... Lincoln?

"Things changed sweetheart, when our son decided to interrupt my business operation,"

"Wait... Dad?" I asked.

"I guess he didn't inherit my smarts," BlackJacket chuckled.

"Why didn't you tell us!" I yelled at my mom. I couldn't believe my dad was a gang leader. I mean, I always knew he was a monster, but I thought he left Fortdale when I was a child.
