All throughout history, there's something that every culture has had in common. From ancient civilizations to modern dynasties, no matter where you're looking, it's always persisted through the course of time.
Arranged marriages.
A hand in marriage in exchange for political and military support. Insurance for ravenous men to expand territories in pursuit of influence and control.
Control. Pitifully, that's also something my father wanted. Control of the entire mafia in North America. He didn't want to just be the biggest reigning family. No, his hunger for control ran much deeper; he wanted to be the only one.
For years, my stepmother had relentlessly tried to arrange a marriage between her daughter, my stepsister Gianna, and Dante Moretti, the heir to the biggest mafia family across Europe and North America.
But much to her dismay, he showed no interest, and she blamed me for it.
He would have agreed if he didn't care for you so much.
Maybe. Dante knew how much I hated my stepmother, and giving her what she wanted was the last thing he'd ever do. He was the big brother figure I wished I always had.
Of course, she would never try to set me up with him because then I would be too powerful. She saved her last options for me: a family influential enough to help ours, but far less than what Gianna would get.
"For the record." I told my father as my gaze fixated on the Russian men walking towards us. "I deserve better. After all, I'm your only blood heir."
"Smile, Chessie." His indifference stung me as he didn't even bother sparing me a glance. "Nikolaev doesn't like brats."
And as I stood there, with my father's hands around my waist, I knew that this wasn't the man who raised me. It was a man whose hunger for control had completely consumed him.
One that I couldn't trust.
