nature seemed to be the only variable on earth to still be thriving. the clouds still made shapes. the leaves still fell. the rivers still ran.

florence wished that sometimes she could be part of nature. maybe she would be a daisy in a vast, grassy field, or maybe she would be a tree, standing tall above all else. she wondered what it would be like to be a tree, whether or not she could communicate with other trees. thoughts like this filled her head often.

before the apocalypse, she thought about what she wanted for dinner, ir what movie she would watch with her family on saturday nights.

now, she wonders if she could have just been put in earth to be part of nature.

the wind was still, the air crisp as summer began to fade away and autumn grew closer. the roads were scattered with red and orange leaves.

to florence it was beautiful.

until the ungodly sight of the dead came into view. trampling carelessly over the crunchy leaves on their way to end another life.

florence sat on the steps leading up to the house. they had been staying there for a month, but her dad insists that they keep moving, try find other people.

she sat there, her backpack by her side as her brother came and sat next to her. he saw her staring into the distance, at the dead. she hadn't killed any yet. she was too young, her dad said.

"you ok flo?" cameron asked her.

"it's too early, why cant we wait till the afternoon?" she replied

florence hated waking up early. when she was 5, she once told her parents that she would no longer attend school due to waking up at 6:30am every morning. obviously they just laughed at her antics and said;

"its just life sweetie"

florence continued to go to school, sometimes deliberately staying in bed a minute longer everyday to see if her parents would notice.

"well, we can walk further if we start earlier, we dont want to be walking in the dark now." cameron replied.

"ok, im tired still." florence replied knowing the answer she would get.

"ok, you walk for 2 hours, then ill give you a piggyback for a half hour, deal?"

"deal!" florence agreed.

she loved her brother, they were each other best friends. they cared for each other when they were falling apart, something that nobody else could do.

florence turned around at the sound of the front door opening.

her dad was her hero. he was a police officer before the fall. he never told florence all the details of his job, for obvious reasons, but she told everyone that he was saving lives for people who need help.

"right, y'all ready to go." he asked, walking down the stairs, patting florence on her head as he passed her.

florence and cameron said yes, as they picked up their bags and followed their father.
