The scream of the steaming pipes was deafening, but not loud enough to drown out the pounding of my own heartbeat.
"Do you think we've lost emm?"
I turn toward the voice, finding myself face to face with a pair of terrified blue eyes. I take a deep breath trying to listen beyond the steam for any clues to the killer's whereabouts. Nothing. The only sounds, the steam and my own heartbeat mingling with hers.
"Did you hear that?" Maddie whispers suddenly, wrapping herself tightly around my arm.
"Hear what?" I whisper before being shushed by the other girl.
Then I hear it. The quiet clank of metal being kicked around on a concrete floor mere feet away from us. Perhaps even on the other side of the pipes. I hold back a whimper and start quietly moving away from the sounds and towards the staircase across the room. God I hope Greg left it unlocked. We move slowly, terrified to make any noises that could possibly alert whoever it was in the room with us. I can practically feel my heartbeat in my ears, and tears pricking at my eyes as we inch ever closer.
Only when we reach the door do I finally get a good look at the killer. They're in a large black robe that covers most of their body, but on their face is a mask. A ghostface mask. Holy shit this guy's trying to recreate one of the stab films! I feel Maddie freeze against me as she sees the culprit as well. She's absolutely terrified, and ya know what, so am I. As quietly as I can, I grab the doorknob and turn it. The large metal door creaks as it opens letting the killer know exactly where we are.
"Oh shit!" I shout as they start running towards us. I practically throw us both through the doorway, just barely getting it closed and locked before the ghostface wannabe makes it to us. But that doesn't stop them from trying to pursue us. They start by violently jiggling the doorknob, surprising me enough to nearly trip as I step back from the door. Then when that doesn't seem to work, the killer starts pounding on the door first with their fists and then with something that sounds metallic. They're trying to break down the door!
Maddie screams, as the attacks get louder and faster.
"Let's go!" I shout, grabbing her hand and practically dragging her up the staircase behind us. We make it to the top just to find another large metal door. I jiggle the handle. It's locked. The tears finally make it down my face as I look over at Maddie. Based on the look on her face, I know she knows we're trapped.
"We're gonna die here aren't we?" Maddie asks, defeat eminent in her voice.
I look over at her, not even sure what to say. I open my mouth to say something but there's nothing I can. The killer's trying to break down the door and our one exit is blocked. That's it, we're gonna die here.
I look back over at Maddie and she's crying too, "Well if we're not gonna make it, I guess i better say it now," she says. I shoot her a confused look as she moves closer. She takes my hands in hers and takes a deep breath, trying to block out the angered banging of the lower staircase door. "Leila, I like you," she says finally, "Like I really like you. Like I've had a crush on you for like forever and I was just to scared to tell you cause I didn't know how you'd-"
I lean forward, cutting her off as I bring our lips together. For a moment it feels as if everything is right with the world. Just her and me together in this fluorescent lit staircase. I feel my back hit the wall, her arms on either side of my head as we kiss. I'm trapped between her and the smooth concrete, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I pull her closer all but forgetting about the killer at the door below. She moves one arm, pushing it up under my shirt, grazing the soft skin underneath. I can't even hear the banging anymore. She pulls her hand away leaving a cold longing on my skin where it just had been. Then she pulls away entirely, keeping her right arm up against the wall, and keeping me trapped here. I open my eyes, seeing her just inches from my face. God damn is she beautiful. I smile, and that's when I notice it. The banging. It had stopped.
I look at her, an ounce of hope in my heart,"They stopped," I say, "I think we're safe." I smile at her, but she doesn't smile back. She has an almost sad look on her face.
"What's wrong-" I say, my words cut off as I feel something plunged violently into my abdomen. I glance down, taking in the scene playing out in front of me. She stabbed me! But why? I reached toward the pain, my hand coming back covered in blood, my blood. I looked back up at Maddie, my body shaking and the expression on her face unreadable.
"Why?" I ask her, "Why?"
She tilts her head giving me a sad smile as she brings the knife further up my abdomen and twists it, bringing with it immense pain. I wince, the pain almost too much, my own tears and blood feeling hot against my skin. Why? Why did she do this? How could she do this?
"Haven't you ever watched a horror movie?" Maddie chides, pulling the knife out sharply as I wince once more, "Never trust the love interest."
My eyes widen as she brings the knife up to my throat, my mouth opening, begging her to stop. But she doesn't. I don't feel the pain, only the warm blood trickling down my throat. I watch one last time as she wipes the blade clean and lets me fall to the floor. With tears clouding my eyes I watch helplessly as the world fades in and out, then finally fades to black.
