I sit in the meeting room and thoughtfully tap my fingers on the table and listen carefully to everything that is happening around me. On my left hand lay a pen with an empty pad where I was supposed to take notes, but I don't need it, because I really believe only amateurs take notes. However, on my right side is a glass full of water that I haven't drunk yet. I sit at the head of the table on the other end and my opponents are seated on the other end with their consultant.
"Have you heard what I have just told you?" asks me David Anderson, one of my opponents and the owner of a law company that will surely go bankrupt in no more than a few months.
"I have heard you clearly," I answer with an expression of complete unreadability, "but I don't think we're gonna get a deal, though."
Anderson clenches his hands into tight fists in anger and his son calms him down slightly. I know I've gotten under his skin. If you want to be good at what I do, you have to keep a cool mask and not give in to your emotions. Anderson is an old man and doesn't know how to sell his products and services. The sooner he sells his business or goes bankrupt, the better for everyone. They really should have finished earlier. Anderson's son, Marcel Anderson, gives his father a gentle squeeze on the shoulder and speaks instead of his father.
"On what terms would you be willing to buy our company, Mr. D'Angelo," Asks me Marcel Anderson with a voice of reason and calmness. Or he tries to sound like this, because there is no way that even one person on this fucking planet would behave like this when there is someone that wants to basically rob them of the profit they could otherwise receive.
"Take down the price to 45%," I suggest without hesitation, watching their reaction carefully. David Anderson straightens up and pierces me with a cold look that might scare most people, not me however. I also notice that my employees and advisers are also watching me closely, but I don't give them a single glance. My main interest lies at the Andersons and mainly what they can offer me.
"We would be willing to go to 5%," David Anderson barks at me, and the way he presses the edge of the table clearly shows how angry he feels. Just the fact that they are starting to negotiate with me means that I have already won.
I settle more comfortably in the chair and thoughtfully tap my fingers on the table again. The only thing that can be heard in the room at this moment is the tapping of my fingers. Everyone is waiting with bated breath for my reaction. I already know what I will say, but I enjoy playing with their minds. It's amazing how easily I can turn their anger against them.
"We could negotiate on a 38% lower price, but I'm not willing to go any lower," I say, noticing out of the corner of my eye that some of my employees are shaking their heads in disbelief. They think I have already lost, but that's the reason why they don't own one of the richest companies in the world.
"This offer can't-," Marcel Anderson starts to speak, but I cut him off with a raised palm and continue with a calm, somewhat bored expression. "Either you get paid for a company that will completely destroy you in a few weeks or few months. You will either get off poor or accept my last offer and at least get something of it. Anyway, if you reject my offer now, I will buy your company later for the same price. So I ask you one last time, do you accept my offer?'
It's not entirely true what I have said. If I would have bought their company later, I would have to buy their company for a much higher price, but they don't need to know that. Marcel Anderson whispers something to his father, but I'm pretty sure he'll take me up on my offer. This is finally confirmed to me when David Anderson reluctantly nods with an angry expression on his face.
"We accept your offer, Mr. D'Angelo,"
"Great. In that case, write it all down and my people will send all the money to you till today."
