                                                                                    charlotte

I'm driving back to my house with a smile on my face. I've never known anyone like Ruby but something about him is just so inviting. My smile immediately drops as I pull into my driveway and notice a beaten-up green Camaro.

I sigh and turn off my car. I quickly text Ruby 'he's here.'  and I send him my location before my car door swings open and I'm dragged out. I free my arm away and yell at him, "What the fuck, Tommy!"

He wraps my hair around his hand and pulls me up so my face is inches away from his before he speaks and I can feel his hot breath against my cheeks contrasting with the cold air, "You really think you can do this to me? Do you really think you're gonna leave me? Well, you're not, you are mine. Your lil friend ain't here no more to protect you."

I laugh in his face and he slams me against the car. "You think this is funny?" He speaks coldly before he punches me in my nose. I feel the blood rushing down my face but I ignore it. I swing at him and punch his jaw as hard as I can, causing him to stumble back. His boy comes up to us, "Hurry up, Tommy, we gotta go." Tommy turns to look at him and I use this to my advantage. I punch him in the stomach before his friend angrily walks over to me and picks me up from behind. I kick my legs, trying to free myself.

A sudden rush of relief washes over me as Ruby pulls up in a giant lifted truck. Tommy's friend drops me and pulls his gun out pointing it at Ruby as he steps out of his truck. I stand up from the cold ground and try to run over to Ruby but Tommy grabs my wrist harshly, pulling me back.

Ruby immediately points his gun at Tommy as soon as he touches me and he starts walking faster toward us. Ruby fires two shots in the direction of Tommy's friend and I close my eyes tightly at the harsh noise.

"You don't wanna do this. Let her go." Ruby speaks coldly to Tommy. "I'm not doing shit. You need to mind your own business." I try to squirm free of Tommy's grasp but to no avail.

Tommy points his gun at Ruby and Ruby glances over to me and notices the blood rushing out of my nose. He doesn't hesitate to shoot Tommy in between his eyes. I let out a blood-curdling scream and Ruby rushes over to me.

I feel Tommy's hand fall away from my wrist and my legs give out. I fall to my knees and Ruby lifts me into the air as if I'm light as a feather. He carries me to his truck and gently sits me in the passenger seat. I start to hear sirens and Ruby rushes over to the driver seat as I'm sobbing hysterically.

I look over at Ruby and his expression is almost unreadable aside from the obvious anger. He doesn't say a word and I don't know what to think. We arrive at his familiar mansion and he kills the engine before walking over to me and once again carrying me in his arms.

I bury my face in the crook of his neck, still sobbing. He carries me inside and picks up a bottle of liquor off of his coffee table before carrying me upstairs and setting me on his king-size bed.

I lay there sobbing, unable to believe that what just happened actually happened. My ears are ringing and I begin struggling to breathe. My chest rises and falls but no air is making it to my lungs. I don't know what to think. I don't know what to do. There's nothing I can do...

Ruby lays next to me in his bed and he picks me up to hold me in his arms. He leans over and whispers in my ear, "It's okay, baby. You're safe here, I'm never going to let anyone hurt you ever again."  I start crying even more when he says that because no one has ever made me feel this way. No one has ever made me feel important enough to be protected.

He holds me as I am slowly being able to breathe again. He strokes my hair and tells me that everything will be alright and I believe him.

I press myself against him and he holds me tighter. I feel so safe but all I can think about is how I'm probably getting Tommy's blood and my own all over him. Images of Tommy's mutilated corpse begin flashing in my mind. I look up at him and he looks down at me, I break the silence, my voice shakey and low, "Can I shower?"

Ruby laughs softly and nods before leading me to his bathroom. My legs are wobbly but I follow close behind him. I feel as though if he's too far away then I won't be safe anymore.

He leaves me in the bathroom and I turn the shower as hot as it gets. He returns with a towel and a folded black shirt. He places them on the counter and leaves the bathroom, shutting the door behind him. I peel my bloody clothes off and step into the shower. I look down and see dark blood all over the shower floor. I begin crying again and I sit down, bringing my knees to my chest.

I finish showering and dry myself with the towel that Ruby brought me. I slip on his black shirt that falls down at my knees. I dry my hair with the towel, leaving it down to air dry.

I walk out of the bathroom, Ruby is not in his room and his bed is stripped. I assume he's washing the blankets because they have blood on them.

Ruby walks in moments later with some more blankets, "Do you need anything?" he asks me and I struggle to keep eye contact with him. "I'm just really tired." he nods and places a new sheet over his bed before picking me up and laying me down on his bed. He pulls a blanket over me, "I think you should stay with me for a little bit so I can make sure that you're safe. Cops are probably swarming your apartment right now so there's no way you could go back now anyway."

I part my lips to protest but he speaks first, "I don't mind at all. I want you to stay." he tells me before taking a swig of the bottle of liquor that found its way back to his hand. He lays in the bed next to me and wraps his big arms around me, drinking from the bottle occasionally.

His big arms around me a blanket in themselves. I can't remember the last time I've been so comfortable. My thoughts are interrupted by the desire to sleep and I relax even more in his arms, drifting to sleep.
