A Gender Reveal

MAYA POV

We'd finally made it to three months, three months of me trying my best to not blurt out the news. Three months of Carina harshly kissing me in front of friends when she's clocked that I'm about to share everything. But today is the day when I can say it, I can tell everyone the news and Carina can't stop me. Well, she has to stop me until 1pm, a party planned at the station by the people at the station. It's exciting to say the least.

"Can I call someone and tell them, already?" I ask impatiently, wanting nothing more than to see the surprise fill someone's face, or hear the audible gasp of people who are happy for us.

"You can call your brother and tell him again" Carina replies, I know she's rolled her eyes at my question. If it was the other way round, I probably would be doing the exact same thing.

"I've already called Mason 4 times this morning. I need to tell someone new" I beg Carina, complaining about the need I feel for sharing this info.

"It was cute at the beginning but now it's just annoying, Maya" Carina replies actually looking annoyed, expressing her words successfully.

"But don't you want me to be excited about the little angel inside of you?" Not necessarily seeing the point, I decide to interrogate her, she rolls her eyes again and this time I can see it. This time, she's taken the right or wrong moment to turn to me instead of packing up the food for the station.

"I want you to be very excited, but I also need you to calm down slightly. We have an hour until you can share the news, well no not an hour. We have about an hour and half or maybe two, it depends on our lovely friends." Carina reminds me, a smile on her face as she brings me into a comfortable hug, a hug where her hands find their way around my neck and mine around her waist.

"But we all know that Andy is going to be late, and then there's Vic and Travis. We'll never get to announce it. I think I'm going to call them and tell them there's been a change in plans. Get them to come an hour early" I whine in a childlike way, almost bringing my hands together as my mind starts to build a plan.

"We're not calling your friends because they could be late. If it's not Andy, Vic, or Travis, it'll be Teddy" She all but reminds me of her friends, her one friend that is notorious for being late. She'd be late for her funeral, she's someone who is just late to everything.

"But it's not fair" I whine, wanting desperately to stomp my foot, resisting because I know how embarrassing and childish, I'm acting.

"How about I give you a job to tick off?" Carina comes up with the perfect plan, the perfect thing to let me get busy and execute whatever it is perfectly. I hastily nod as I await the plans.

"How about, you go and pick up the balloons and get some tomato soup and oranges on the way home?" She thinks for a second before slightly shaking her head, showing me that she's done with this list and that I can leave. Kissing her cheek, I hurry out of the door.

-

At the store, I find everything I need except for the oranges. For some reason, there's a national shortage, that's an exaggeration for sure.

"Oh, hi Maya" A voice I'd been avoiding rings in my ears.

"Mom" I reply curtly, its awkward and the silence just makes it worse.

"Oh, are you going to a party?" She questions me, looking at the balloons in my hands.

"It's the gender reveal for the baby, Carina is pregnant" I share the news, finding no reason to lie. I might not be anywhere close to forgiving her but the least I can do is share some news. I can get the buzz of giving the news without affecting the party itself or Carina.

"Congratulations. I hope you enjoy your party and give your warmest regards to Carina" Mom says, she wavers slightly and shakes her head in such a way that it looks as if she was trying to hide it.

"Thank you, mom. I need to get going" I remind myself and tell her.

-

After seeing my mom at the store, I found myself driving home to pick Carina up and get to the station in quite the hurry. I think the stress of a single conversation, bought out the kid racer in me. Carina wasn't proud of me; the front of my car wasn't very happy with me. I turned particularly quickly, and Carina had thrown up just as we turned, I think my punishment will be cleaning this up.

The station had set up the beanery and outside balcony up with tables for the party. I was excited for the most part but the small conversation with my mom had thrown me off.

"Wow, you're all early" I say in surprise as Teddy, Jo, Vic, and Travis all walk into the beanery together.

"I told you she'd say that. Pay up" Travis mutters to the others, they all scoff and take out the cash.

"Why are you early?" I question them.

"I think the correct response would be 'it's so nice to meet you, how are you?'" Travis teases me before hugging me and walking over to my wife. They start to talk animatedly about a show they've both been watching.

"How do you feel having a pregnant wife?" Teddy asked, Jo remaining next to be as Vic followed Travis.
"It's strange, she's carrying an extension of our world in her stomach. It made me pretty protective, I will admit" I respond, the women look between each other and try to stifle a giggle. Furrowing my eyebrows in confusion, I wait for one of them to explain.

"Bambina, a little bit protective is such an under exaggeration. I saw you looking into safety measures for a pregnant woman, looking at the perfect pillow for me to carry around with me in case I fall" My wife teases me, the women laughing at the apparent stupidity of my searches.

"Hey, you shouldn't have gone through my phone. You deleted everything before I could really do the research" I try to defend myself but by the look of our friends, I can tell that I've lost. Slowly as people start to turn up, the area becomes busier, and I can't help but get slightly overwhelmed.

"Right, everyone, the moment is here so if you could please look here" I shout, the noise around us ceases and everyone turns, excited looks on every single persons' face. "Are you ready, my stalker?" I whisper to Carina; she playfully swats my arm before picking up her knife.

"Can we get a countdown from 5?" I ask, and the counting begins.

"5"

"4"

"3"

"2"

"1" the crowd goes silent, the anticipation in this room only building more and more. Carina carefully slices into the cake, the frosting on the outside perfectly concealing the colour of the inside. She slowly moves it back, hiding it from the people around us but so that I could see it. It's pink, it's a girl. A kiss her lightly on the cheek, are eyes make contact for only a few seconds, but we can convey the emotions, the happiness and pride we have for our child. She lifts the slice of cake up slowly and just like we expected, cheers filled the area around us. The guests came flooding towards us, arms thrown around me as everyone seemed to want to hug me. Carina received the same treatment.

"Congrats Sis, you'll be a great parent" Mason says as he makes his way over, the hug between us only lasting seconds.

-

The rest of the party felt like a blur, the cake had been consumed, the music had drowned out all conversation, and our feet were killing us. We left earlier than we'd expected, wanting nothing more than to go home and sleep and that's what we did. We had a nap from 4pm to 7pm, Carina had moved herself to sit mostly on top of me, not that I minded one bit.

"Thank you, bambina" Carina mumbled against my skin, leaving a kiss on my shoulder.

"For what, beautiful?" I asked in a whisper, holding her body tighter to mine.

"For giving me a life, I wanted, a marriage and now children. I love you." She lifts her head slightly, enough for me to see her true facial expression, to see her unshed tears with a slight smile.

"I love you too" I whisper, her tears full and her smile only grows. No Olympic medal would make me feel as happy as making my wife happy; as making my stalker happy.
