Chapter 1-Edward
I awoke to the sound of things being moved around, and as paranoid as they come, I sat up, pointing a dagger at the threat. "Drop it!" I ordered it, which happened to only be a woman. But she was not the woman who usually appeared in my room to move things around, so she had two moments to find the words to talk or else she would be dead by the third.
All the things in her arms dropped to the ground, and she raised her hands up to show that she didn't have anything. "My name is Mirabelle. My mother is Hildegard. She sent me in to collect the clothes for washing today." She said, panicked. "My King."
"Hildegard? Why isn't she present to do this herself?" I asked slowly, still holding the blade toward her. Hildegard has been collecting my laundry and doing things I only trust her to do since I was a child. Waking up to find this Mirabelle in my room came as an unpleasant shock.
"She acts as a midwife now." She informed me. "She told me that you knew. Please forgive me, My Lord." Mirabelle lowered her head.
"She neglected to tell me that she was going to be leaving as a midwife." I said angrily.
"My King," Hildegard has said from behind me, as I gazed out the window into nothingness. "I would like to tell you I'll no longer be assisting you. I will be working as a midwife from now."
"Yes, alright," I said, hardly understanding my own words.
I sighed and dropped my head and lowered the dagger in my hand. "I nearly killed you!" I stressed to her.
She began to gather the clothing. "Please forgive me, I'm sorry," she begged. "She said that you might trust me."
"Do no be foolish. I do not trust anyone."
She was still and quiet for a moment. "Thank you for sparing my life, My King. I live only to serve you." She gave me the most proper curtsy she could with her arms full of clothing before rushing from my room.
"The curtains," I said. "She did not draw the curtains."
The room was still bathed in a darkness, a bit like my heart. I curled into a pathetic ball, feeling every urge to disappear into myself, but I hardly deserved that. What I needed to do was get out of bed and become informed on that was taking place in my kingdom. Who to be hanged, who has not paid their dues to the kingdom. Basic kingly things that I was now obligated to handle.
After getting washed up and dressed, I exited my private room."You are awake, My King." Borin said. "I come with important news."
Important news surely meant that someone had died. In fact, it most surely had to do with that bastard King of Carlin continuing to try to remove land from under my name. He wanted to take my land and take my people. He took my father! I longed wrap my hands around his throat and choke the life from his eyes. The loss of his life would fill ever aching hole in my heart.
"A camp we had right outside of Wickensdale got raided a few days ago, My King." He informed me regretfully.
"And how did this happen?" I stopped walking and turned to shout at him. "Do we not train them well enough? Are they not being fed correctly. Why does it seem like we're sending out supplies and weapons only to be returned with more death?" I asked angrily.
"I do not know, My King." He said weakly.
"Then I suggest finding someone who does know, or finding out yourself!" I shouted at him. He hurried away and I walked down the dark corridors. Early morning and someone has already informed me of the atrocities happening.
"Your meal is ready, My King," a servant said, smiling, and giving me her best curtsy. My eyes looked at her for a moment. Beautiful, of course, but that was going to get her no where with me. I did not have time, no room in my life to lay with a soul snatching succubus who most surely only wanted to have my child in order to stay in the castle.
