Chicken

It was turning out to be one of those parties.

The kind where the bass throbs like a heartbeat on ecstasy, where the light screams distortedly if it's there at all, where lovers kiss in the open like blinded deer in headlights.

But it wasn't quite there yet. Most of the guests still remained at least partially sentient, and civil for the most part. It was the moment between starting to get drunk and starting to fall asleep- or starting to sleep with someone. It was when people played party games with one another, just like they'd always fantasized about in the first few days of middle school.

Forget spin the bottle- this crowd was way past that. They needed competition, mixed with just the right amount of scandal and shame. They were out for blood.

And luckily for the attendees, perhaps the the two most competitive boys from the junior class were floating around somewhere inside the depths of the party. And the portion of the junior class that had bonded together with a game in mind, knew that they had to see Vic Fuentes and Kellin Quinn play a game of gay chicken before this night was over.

Kellin Quinn and Vic Fuentes were those kinds of kids who took every competition a little too seriously- think of that one straight white boy in your gym class who treats P.E. like the Hunger Games. Like that. There was no doubt that they would take this a little too seriously as well. And hey, free porn right in your living room with two of the hottest guys in school.

If you think about it, gay chicken seems rather homophobic, with the shameful attitude towards homosexuality, but otherwise, gay chicken seems to be a harmless enough game. It wasn't like the two would go farther than a kiss (at least, if they weren't too drunk). After all, Kellin and Vic didn't seem like they would be attracted to each other. They were both single, and maybe some of the students could recollect a past girlfriend of either of them. Not exactly likely to embrace this opportunity as a chance to hook up. They were acquaintances, if not friends, and you wouldn't want to make things weird between you and your buddy. At least, that's what everyone in the room thought.

As you'll see, the crowd was most definitely underestimating how competitive the two boys were and how far they'd go to prove themselves uncowardly.

"Kellin!" someone yelled. Kellin looked over his shoulder to see a slightly inebriated girl stumble toward him, another girl in tow.

"What?" he asked flatly. He was certain he didn't want to dance, and if the two girls were calling him because they wanted to go get more liquor or something and wanted him to drive, he wasn't down for that either. The girls giggled and glanced at each other. "Would you just tell me?" Kellin exclaimed, exasperated. He didn't have all night!

"You think you're pretty competitive, right?"
"Right." He asserted. It was common knowledge.

"Is Vic Fuentes more of a coward than you?" Kellin licked his lips when he heard them mention Vic Fuentes. "First of all, never use the word coward in a sentence mentioning me. Secondly, of course. I'm braver than him in anything."

"ANYTHING?" the girls practically shrieked with glee. Kellin realized that making those claims about his fearlessness may have been a bad idea, but it was too late now. He couldn't back down. He steeled himself, then answered,

"Yeah. Anything."

The girls screeched with laughter again. "Well then I hope you like trading spit with Vic- you're gonna be playing gay chicken with him to prove it!" They ran off to find Vic as Kellin sighed and got up from his chair, leaving his drink on the table next to him. He should've known this would happen. Nonetheless, He followed them to retrieve Vic.

"Vic!" a voice called. Vic whipped around from his conversation. Two excited girls were clumsily walking towards him, shit-eating grins on their faces. After a few moments, Kellin showed up next to them, hands in his pockets.

Vic gulped. Whatever reason these girls had brought over Kellin, it wasn't good.

"Vic, do you think you can beat Kellin in a game of gay chicken?" they giggled. Getting to the point, thought Kellin. He supposed that they were tired of dawdling and just wanted to see which boy would have to shout "no homo" first.

Vic really didn't want to say yes. He didn't exactly fancy the idea of most of his classmates watching him make out with his sort-of friend who he may have dreamed about on certain occasions. Maybe. But, his honor was at stake, and possibly he had wanted to kiss Kellin Quinn and now he had a reason to do it with no real repercussions- although he did run the risk of being called gay if he didn't push away Kellin first- and the certainty of being called a sissy if he pushed Kellin away. He couldn't win.

Oh well. It was impossible to say no. "Of course I can beat him at gay chicken," Vic smirked at Kellin, a glint in his eye. "Just you wait and see."

About five minutes later, a sizable amount of people had gathered in the living room of whoever's house this was. People sat in a circle around the center of the room, laughing on couches and sitting on the floor. Kellin and Vic stepped into the center, facing each other. They waited, each trying to conceal their discomfort and embarrassment with a facade of confidence.  It didn't really work. Vic scratched the back of his neck. Kellin chewed on his lip. They waited with baited breath for someone, anyone, to say something. Neither wanted to incite it- that was toeing the line between "gay" and "brave" a little too closely.

"YOU BOTH TOO CHICKEN TO EVEN TOUCH EACH OTHER?!" screamed one of the jocks.

"Yeah, pretty boy," Vic muttered at Kellin, drawing closer. "Too scared to even come close to me?"

"I'm not scared!" Kellin cried out.
"Prove. It." Vic uttered, leaning in until their faces were only a few inches apart. Kellin grabbed Vic's face with both his hands and kissed him.

"OHHHH!" yelled the mob of people around them. Then they fell silent. Usually, the people would kiss and then shove each other away, sputtering. But Vic kissed Kellin back, neither one pulling away.

"Okay, so they're not pulling away," said the jock uncertainly, who'd decided to be the commentator. "Who's gonna be the coward?"

But they just kept kissing, Vic's hands running up and down Kellin's sides. The group watched in sick fascination as Kellin put his hands in the back pockets on Vic's jeans. In response, Vic slid his hands under Kellin's shirt, Kellin lifting his arms for a moment so he could pull it off.

"Okay guys, you can stop now, you're not cowards." But they couldn't stop. They couldn't back out now. They had to prove who was the more cowardly of the two. They did not intend to back down.

A few people left the room when Kellin pushed Vic down on the carpet, climbing on top of him.

"OKAY YOU GUYS THIS IS JUST FOREPLAY! DO NOT DO IT IN MY LIVING ROOM! WE GET IT, YOU GUYS AREN'T CHICKEN!"

Kellin sat up and looked at the jock. "We can't stop. One of us has to back down. I'm not going to be a coward." He kissed Vic again.

"Y'know, we kinda got a little bit past 'taking this game of gay chicken a little too seriously' when you took your pants off, but I really do not mind at all."
