Tamina
Swivelling on my heels, I catch exactly what I'm searching for. A gold twinkle glints back at me from high up on the curtain pole. It never comes down unless it's for a special occasion; that way, I know it will remain safe. Since my eighteenth birthday, when I see it in the morning it stirs a sweet memory that never fails to fill me with warmth. Each time it does, mum's words accompany it.
"You're a young woman now. This is to bring you luck and to remind you that I'll always love you."
Peering up at it, the mere sight brings a wave of hope that maybe something will go right; whether that's me bending to the outcome Brandon's hoping for, or something safer in case the day I consider more with him arrives at a later time.
With tingling cheeks, I reach up on tiptoes, unhook the chain and clasp the Zodiac pendant in my palm. Clipping it around my neck, it pleases me to see that it sits perfectly in the centre of the scoop neckline of my top, flat against my chest.
Reaching into the bottom of the bedside cabinet, I retrieve the hair drier and blow my hair until it's dry and silky before running the brush through. Over and over, through and through before I check the time.
There's still thirty minutes left.
Sitting on the edge of the mattress, drumming my fingers against my thigh, I think of what to do. The book Brandon bought me sleeps on my bedside table, begging me to pick it up.
I'm about to do so when my phone vibrates against the sheets. A thrilling buzz swirls through me at the thought of Brandon being the reason my phone has sprung to life.
Unlocking the phone, I swipe down the notification bar, and a smile blooms at the sight of Brandon's name.
From Brandon: It's nearly time.
My brain grows fuzzy at the notion I'm not the only one spying on the time. I know I shouldn't be this excited, but it makes a change that someone other than my parents are looking forward to seeing me.
Biting my lip, I type:
To Brandon: Yep! Not long left :)
A minute passes when another message pops up.
From Brandon: Are you excited? I am.
I can't believe the words I'm reading. All I can do is sit and stare at the screen while I act like a schoolgirl who read her first romance novel and can't believe she's in one of the many scenes within the pages.
He said casual date, what does a casual date entail?
Scrubbing my hand down my face, I try to think back to the novels I've read to pinpoint what to expect, but the memories all blur into one.
Glancing at the time, there's twenty minutes left.
To Brandon: I know, the time is going by quickly, and I am too
When I hit send, it dawns on me that I've quietly admitted not only to myself, but to Brandon, that I am excited to see him. I want to know if this date will reveal anything different about him, like a habit he might have, or a funny secret he's embarrassed to share.
