One thing that took Nico completely by surprise after his cacodemons followed him out of the Underworld was their unwavering attachment to Lou Ellen, the daughter of Hecate. To his amazement, each of his children adored her.

Lou Ellen wasn't as much of a fan of the cacodemons as they were of her, downplaying their bond by attributing their attraction to her magical aura. Nico thought that was bullshit. His cacodemons could sense inherently good people and they flocked to them. Lou Ellen and the Hunters of Artemus drew in the cacodemons, and they avoided the Ares cabin like the plague, except for Clarisse. They loved the daughter of Ares almost as much as Nico and Lou Ellen.

Nico wasn't happy about his kids' bond with the tightly-wound daughter of Ares, but, despite his reservations, he found solace in having a dependable babysitter available whenever the need arose. He and Will trusted Leo and Percy to watch their kids once, and well, let it be known, neither of those idiots should ever be responsible for children, human or otherwise. Fortunately, Clarisse readily stepped in to relieve Nico of the cacodemons, confident she could train them to attack Percy on sight if she prayed to Ares hard enough. Nico was perfectly willing, much to Will's chagrin, to lend Clarisse their kids if it meant he could be present when she sicced them on Percy.

Today, as usual, Nico was running through Camp Half-Blood, a whirlwind of anxiety gripping his heart tightly. He woke up next to Will and the cacodemons had vanished from the Hades cabin. The door was still securely shut and locked, but that didn't stop the cacodemons, who inherited Nico's shadow-traveling powers, as most Underworld beings had.

None of the children were with Clarisse on the training field, she hadn't seen them since the night before at dinner, and considering the cacodemons weren't canoeing with Percy or hanging out with Leo in Bunker 9, as they were wont to do, Nico was worried. There was one place left to look before he genuinely freaked out and involved Chiron and Mr. D in the disappearance of his kids.

As if hearing Nico's thoughts, Lou Ellen screamed bloody murder, loud enough for Nico to hear on the other side of camp. Ignoring the startled looks of other campers, Nico shadow-traveled to the Hecate cabin, his heart racing in concern. What had his mischievous children done now?

The front door hung precariously on its hinges, beckoning Nico to come in. He exercised caution as he stepped onto the creaking porch, having learned from past encounters that it is dangerous to enter the Hecate cabin without permission.

Lou Ellen was an expert in setting traps, magic and otherwise, so Nico knocked on the open door and quickly stepped back, unsure of what magical surprise she had cooked up. She poked her head around the edge of the door frame, looking disheveled with unruly hair and ruined makeup. "Di Angelo," she snarled.
