Astrid's heart rate rose as she watched his pupils enlarge and the light behind them flicker. This was his body, his voice but this was not him.

It said, " Astrid, you are my home. You are my salvation but you're also my destruction."

'Nolan' leaped but missed Astrid as her mother suddenly dragged her away pulling her into her arms.

Nolan reached out to her but retracted his hand quickly to protect his neck from her father. He placed Nolan in a chokehold and held a knife against his neck.

Her father snarled, "If you move one inch I will have no choice but to hurt you, son."

Astrid's eyes widened as she caught a glimpse of her father and her husband.

Looking at both her parents and Nolan she needed to decide on what to do.

Nolan moved towards her whispering, " This will be the end of us. Do you want that?".

The blade cut his neck, a superficial cut that made him bleed and her unnerved. There was an abrupt moment before the voices started again. Nolan winced at the sound of the voices inside his head. The voices in his head kept telling him what to do. They kept encouraging everyone's demise, especially Astrid's. The hatred they proclaimed was a mind fuck terror. Staring at her ailing hands he tried to center himself. Astrid stared at Nolan as her parents shouted in the background.

She tried her best to muffle their voices. She needed a moment to catch her breath to figure out what to do next. Recoiling into herself - she focused on Nolan's suffering face and wounded body.

Her father asked. "What do you want us to do?".

Astrid's mind was officially at the start of a nervous breakdown.

She broke under the weight of it all. Tears of blood trickled down her face. Astrid couldn't feel anything besides misery. Glancing at the glass ceiling she let out a powerful painful shout. Small cracks appeared throughout the arboretum. Astrid still had power left. Everyone around her passed out from the high screeching pitch of her scream. Her voice cracked, and she helplessly fell to the ground. Astrid began to cry hysterically. The pain was torturous. She wrapped her arms around her hugging herself, she started cursing at herself.

Before they both woke up, they lived a peaceful life. She was happy sharing a life with him. Nolan had protected, cared for, loved, and empowered her in ways everyone hoped to experience once. When they were awoken and taken out of the stimulation they were each other's strength and weakness. This fact has been proven time and time again in war and life.

The feelings in her heart were different from the pain she feels now.

It took everything in Nolan to crawl to her side and lift himself. Their environments were changing around them, and due to Astrid's break the power she held was descending into code chaos. She was losing control and the stronger her emotions became the harder it would be to return to their normal. He held onto the idea that he would be able to love her again one day, and she would love him back. It just wouldn't be in this lifetime.

Nolan was aware of the damage he had caused and the monster he'd forcibly become.

He said, "Astrid..Astr-."

Instinctively, she got up and used the remaining furniture to rise back up. He began to engulf them in a cloud of black smoke. It escaped from his hands and continued to swallow them till they were absorbed in it. Astrid's eyesight was temporarily disabled as she tried to see through the cloud. She felt a hand aggressively grabbing her and pulling her further into the besieging cloud. She struggled to break free from his grasp but held back when she noticed the tears running down his face.

What Astrid wasn't aware of was that this was his only chance to tell her the truth.

He wept, "Astrid... Help me! I'm back in the stimulation. I'm trapped, imprisoned—" Nolan barely got the words out when his grip loosened as the cloud disappeared.

She tried to fight back, but his words confused her. Astrid was trying to understand the situation at hand. She didn't know what or who to believe in anymore. All that she knew was that she was in for the fight of her life against the love of her life. It was a love story that was going to end sorrowfully.

Nolan was screaming from the inside watching through his eyes, watching his body as it tried to hurt his lover. He could feel his fingertips penetrate the inside of his palms as he clenched so tightly. He pleaded for them to stop controlling him. This was the consequence of being careless and brave. Nolan is the chosen one. Even though he defeated them once doesn't mean they wouldn't come back.

He didn't know he was back until it was too late and he was under his control. At first, it felt like a slight sting in his neck, and then the voices started. Nolan noticed the changes in his behavior, his sleep, and his sight. Nolan's logic, memories, and emotions were slowly becoming corrupted and manipulated behind his back.

He was a prisoner to his mind and body. The metal chains they imprisoned him inside tightened their grip. He couldn't give in now.

Nolan struggled internally as he attempted to calm down to loosen the chain's grip. Railing up only made it tighter and harder for him to break free. By the time he realized he was back in the Matrix. They told him it was too late to fight back. He never once stopped fighting. He was enslaved once again but this time his mind was aware. What a tortuous way to become a puppet once more.

This was it. Nolan knew that to save Astrid he would have to let her go. He knew he would lose this battle but he will win the war. Astrid was growing tired as Nolan was drowning in suspense. Sitting there in the 'audience' of his mind, he had a front-row seat to their destruction. For days prior, he tried to break free on his own, and when he finally lost he had to endure all this alongside Astrid.

His mind had become a maze and he was desperately trying to find a way to break free. They- yes they were toying with him and he was toying with her. The chains retracted back and forth as they pulled at his limbs. The metal heated him and sizzled against his body. Nolan fought with all of his willpower and grit. The pleas were repeated as he did not waste one second to tell them to let her go. To take him but let her go. He will have to pull the plug and end this. Outside his prison, Astrid was doing everything in her power to slow him down.

She continued changing the environment sporadically with no sense of stopping. He moved with great agility after her through the streets, the forest, and through the snowy mountains. Unintentionally Astrid brought him to the place where they'd experienced all of their firsts. The snow was steep and hard to walk through this time of the year.

Winter was the season for falling in love and saying goodbye. Once under the snow blankets that covered this town time and time again- their love was otherworldly. Their first kiss was on this snowy mountaintop. The touch of each other's lips still lingered a decade later. The same twinkling in their eyes that appeared after they kissed now reassembled the twinkle of a dying star. Astrid shivered in the knee-deep snow that piled around their winter home.

The cabin stood marvelously at the top of the mountainside. This woody home was the physical manifestation of their love. Their eyes locked as they pulled away staring at the cabin one final time.

They put enough distance between each other as a last attempt to prepare as they knew this was the end. Snowflakes begin to fall, landing in their hair and on their eyelashes. Both of their cheeks were flushed red as they both looked helplessly at each other. The power behind their connection was paramount as they both wanted to rush into each other's arms, but they knew they couldn't because the damage had been done. The cold air blew around them, and Astrid stood still like stone.

A series of visions filled her mind rapidly. Memories of their life together and what the future could've been- without the Matrix. Dripping blood from both parties stained the white wonderland that surrounded them. Suddenly, Nolan's body jerked as he reached towards her.

He mouthed for the final time, " I will always love you."
