There's a time when you come to realize that you will be in pain.

There's a time when you come to realize that you will get sad.

And a time where you will want to disappear.

And times that you feel there is nothing else.

But there are also times where you find the happiness, and you find yourself, and who you are. You find all of that love you thought you wouldn't be able to feel ever again. You love yourself and the others around you. And you love life and you love living. And you find your heart in you. The littlest things will come to make you happy; waking up next your spouse, making a breakfast for your little family in a little home at the corner of your street in a little, tight-knit neighbourhood where everyone else is happy. But in those times you have to realize that there will be pain and sadness. That both the good and the bad will coeexist with each other. You're but a spec in a big, BIG universe that will move on when you're dead. But, you want to make the best of the time before you're actually dead.

This is a story about how me, Mikasa Ackerman, made the best of my short lived adolescence in the sweet seven years junior high and highschool gave to me.

First Day of the Sixth Grade: Homeroom/First Period - September 5th

Nobody hated school more than my brother, Eren did. There was nobody in the world that could match up to the same amount of angst he felt towards the school system. Neither could anybody match up to how much of a sh*tty kid he was in junior high. Believe me, I was in all of the same classes as he was, he was a sh*tty kid.

The first day was absolutely terrible for the three of us -- and by three I mean me, Armin, and my sh*tty younger brother Eren. Our homeroom teacher, was a sh*thead. A literal sh*thead. Not only was she the most mean looking teacher I have ever happened to encounter in my educational career; her breath was god awful. When I mean god awful, I mean god awful.

The first thing she did was put Eren all the way in the back, in the right corner, not only closest to the door, but he was unknowingly the central main target for the dart game she played with chalk and chalk erasers. Secondly, she put me right beside him. I wasn't a target, but I wore a lot of black and there was a lot of chalk dust on that eraser. I never said a thing though; I was a quiet kid. I didn't tend to speak much, I was just adopted, I knew English but I had a god awful accent that didn't leave me until the summer before my Sophomore year in high school. And lastly, Armin was put in the front and center. Mrs. Shadis and her husband, Coach Shadis, tended to do this with the three of us. Separate us so we wouldn't talk or actually enjoy our educational careers.

Lessons with Mrs. Shadis began right away. Not even icebreakers or introductions to put into place. We just got right into English. Eren fell asleep within the first 5 minutes. (he seriously thought he was going to get away with that. pfft, classic eren.) We went through seriously boring grammar lessons that we already went through in the fifth grade before Mrs Shadis got pissed off at Eren and whipped her eraser right at his head, landing on the back of his neck with a oddly satisfying SMACK. And sadly, I was covered in dust particles, my black cat t-shirt and scarf was almost covered in chalk dust. (does this woman not know how to clean her erasers?)  And with a jolt and an angry yell, Eren sat right up, teal eyes glistening with angry tears. Jean, the kid sat in front of him, who had a strangely fat face, looked Eren right in the eye and laughed,

"Oh look! Jaeger is crying!" And all of the other little kids, not including me, Annie, Armin, or this tall sweaty kid in the opposite corner, laughed at him. Eren huffed angrily, staring right at Mrs. Shadis with a childish pout and stood up.

"Why'd you gotta do that for, old lady?" Eren shouted in anger, eyebrows knitting together. God, this was sad. I wanted to laugh so bad right now, but Armin was looking me right and the eyes and did the cut-throat motion. He was practically telling me not to but I wanted to. I'd laugh during lunch probably. Before anything got actually serious, Eren and Mrs. Shadis took a walk out into the hall and to the principal's office. Mrs. Shadis returned, without Eren. Almost all of the kids totally thought Mrs. Shadis had eaten Eren alive. But both Armin and I knew that he was in the principal's office. He would be fine.

As soon as Mrs. Shadis walked in, the class was dismissed. The bell let out a cheerful ring and all of us quickly scuttered out of there, trying our best not to make I contact with the misses.

Armin and I walked to Math together, making passing glances at each other. We seriously thought the first day wasn't going to get any worse. All of our major classes we got through quickly. It was time for lunch now and Eren had been released from prison-- I mean the principal's office. Eren had joined us soon enough at our lunch table. We had to sit with our homeroom class and that kind of sucked since our table happened to be the last to be called up. Also, Jean was really annoying and he kept on making dumb kissy faces at me for no reason. I really couldn't wait to get my food. When our table was up, one of the girls at another table stuck her foot out and tripped me. I glared at her and she stuck out her tongue. I wanted to kick her dumb freckled face in. She was absolutely rotten, but the girl next to her, tiny and blonde, frowned at me, giving me her apologies with her big blue eyes. I smiled at her and continued to walk up to get my food.

Lunch and art went by too fast, and the last period of the day was finally here. Thank god. I thought to myself. But I would not be thanking god. I was standing in a line of girls in the gymnasium, the boys lined up at the other side. Coach Shadis was not a kind man. I learned that he was Mrs. Shadis' despicable-- I mean lovely husband. I had no gym clothes, I didn't know we would be forced to do gym. We had to run the entire hour long period, without breaks. Being a naturally athletic person, I outran all of them except for that tall sweaty boy, who I found out his name was Bertholdt, or Bertolt. I didn't know, I was 11. I was jealous, his long legs gave him the ability to run faster. He was sweating a lot more though, and Coach Shadis seemed to verbally abuse him and Eren more than anyone else. By the end of the period, poor Bertolt (bertholdt?) was crying a lot. When the bell rang, he quickly ran back to homeroom. He was terrified. I hated this place already, but oh well.

My first day of school was over. Now I had to figure out how to make the best of my sixth grade year.
