This is a Severus Snape short story about a non-binary 6th-year student at Hogwarts.
Their name is Alex. But it could easily be a reader insert I just hate the (y/n) thing because it immediately brings me out of what I was reading so I've avoided descriptors to hopefully make this a little better for everyone.
Enjoy! 🥰

Severus Snape had always been a man of routine. His potions classroom was a sanctuary of order, and his personal life was shrouded in secrecy. So, when he began his first year teaching at Hogwarts, he anticipated a continuation of his well-established patterns.

Little did he know that this year would bring an unexpected twist.

The corridors of Hogwarts echoed with the sound of students finishing their exams, leaving the castle with a sense of liberation. Severus, however, found himself restless. As he strolled through the dimly lit dungeons, he detected an unfamiliar noise emanating from the direction of the kitchen.

Curiosity guiding him, Snape descended into the depths of the castle, the aroma of spices growing stronger with each step. He approached the entrance to the kitchen and hesitated. This was a domain usually reserved for house elves and their tasks, not for sixth-year students.

Peering inside, Snape's sharp eyes locked onto an unlikely scene. There, amidst the cauldrons and ingredients, stood a non-binary sixth-year student named Alex, clad in a mismatched ensemble of wizarding robes and a worn apron. Their fingers moved gracefully as they stirred a pot, and a melodious voice filled the air with a hauntingly beautiful tune.

Caught off guard, Snape remained hidden in the shadows, observing the student pour their soul into the concoction and the song. The stress of exams seemed to dissipate as Alex immersed themselves in the rhythmic dance of stirring and singing.

As the song reached its final notes, Snape, unwillingly enchanted by the scene, allowed himself a rare moment of vulnerability. It was then that Alex, seemingly aware of their unexpected audience, turned with a start.

"Well, Professor Snape," they said with a smirk, "you're quite the stealthy observer. Care to join me?"

Caught red-handed, Snape considered retreating, but Alex's inviting smile disarmed him. With a reluctant nod, he entered the kitchen, the door creaking behind him.

The kitchen, usually bustling with the activity of house elves, now served as an unexpected haven for Snape and Alex. Cauldrons bubbled, enchanted knives chopped vegetables with precision, and an orchestra of enchanted instruments provided a whimsical soundtrack to their impromptu collaboration.

The student gestured to a set of ingredients. "We're making a potion to relax the nerves. A specialty of mine."

Snape arched an eyebrow, skepticism evident. "And you think I would be interested in such trivial matters?"

Alex chuckled. "Everyone needs a break, even the infamous Professor Snape. Besides, cooking is a form of potion-making, wouldn't you agree?"

Snape's stern facade softened, and a hint of amusement flickered in his dark eyes. "Perhaps."

As they worked on the potion, Alex shared stories of their unconventional journey through Hogwarts, their passion for potion-making, and their determination to challenge traditional norms. Snape, though initially reserved, found himself drawn to the authenticity and courage that radiated from Alex.

In that unlikely moment, surrounded by the warmth of the kitchen and the camaraderie of shared interests, Severus Snape discovered a side of Hogwarts he had never imagined. And in the presence of the sixth-year student, whose courage and authenticity had captivated him, the walls he had carefully built around his heart began to crumble.

As the potion simmered to perfection, Alex gestured to a set of enchanted instruments that began to play a soft melody. "A little background music to accompany our creation, Professor?"

Snape found himself nodding, and soon the kitchen was filled with the harmonious blend of music and the aroma of their potion. The enchanting atmosphere wrapped around them like a cocoon, creating a moment suspended in time.

In the glow of the enchanted instruments and the warmth of their collaboration, Snape realized that this unexpected encounter had opened a door to a world he had long kept at bay. Hogwarts, it seemed, held secrets beyond the dungeons and potions classrooms, and perhaps, in the company of someone like Alex, Snape could find a connection that transcended the boundaries he had erected around himself.

As the evening unfolded, Snape and Alex continued to cook, share stories, and revel in the magic of the moment. Little did they know that this impromptu collaboration would mark the beginning of an unlikely friendship—one that would challenge Snape's preconceptions and lead him down a path he had never imagined for himself.
