Everything went down like a normal Tuesday night. I finished my homework, ate dinner, went to my room, and played on my laptop until my parents went to bed.
I looked up at the clock on my desk and it read 10:48. I closed my laptop and plugged it in to charge for tomorrow. I changed into my favorite green and black striped sweater, some black jeans, a black hoodie, and some black combat boots.
By now, it was 11:00. I cracked my door and peeked out into the hallway to see if the lights were on downstairs. As expected, they were off. Indicating that my parents were asleep in their room. I silently closed my door and snuck over to my window, unlocking it and grabbing my handmade rope.
My parents obviously wouldn't let me get rope, so I made some out of fabric-elastic bands. They were really sturdy so I tied them to my bedpost and climbed down from the window. Since we lived on a weird part of the ground, I had an 8 foot drop from my window, while my two sisters from the room next door had a 12 foot drop from their window.
I made it safely to the ground like usual and walked off into the forest, using the light of the moon to get around without tripping on anything. I took a deep breath, enjoying the sounds of the crickets in the distance and the occasional passing car. Other than that, it was pretty quiet. That's why I liked these walks at night. No people, no responsibilities, no chores.
It was peaceful. The forest has always been my happy place for this reason. I continued to walk around for a little. Gazing at the moon, running through the trees, and making notes of coordinates for my favorite spots like the clearings or patches of moss. Sometimes I saw mushrooms on the trees. I thought they were cute too.
The alarm on my phone went off, indicating that it was time to walk home. By now, it was 11:20. I checked my maps and I was a good 10 minute walk from my house. I continued to walk in silence, enjoying the comforting forest's silence and beautiful scenery. It felt more like home here than my actual home sometimes. Don't get me wrong, my home was nice. My parents were happy, I had two younger sisters, and we lived in a decent sized house, but it was how we were supposed to be an example of a perfect family all the time. Holding this image up all the time was- suffocating.
Eventually, I made it back home and walked over to the rope. I grabbed it, gave it a good tug to make sure it was safe, and climbed up the wall to my window. I put one foot in and quietly lowered myself onto the floor. I pulled my other leg in, pulled the rope up, and untied it from my bedpost before putting it back into it's hiding spot. I closed and locked my window, got changed into my pajamas, and went to bed.
