After extensive research, it seems that the most plausible beginning is Come Over. The whole song comes off as a teenager pining for a crush, so it may start in the narrator’s teen years. After Come Over is Everywhere, Everything, when the subject and the narrator are in a relationship, which ends in Stick Season, when the subject leaves Strafford. This causes a downward spiral described in Still, Halloween, Your Needs, My Needs and, eventually, Call Your Mom. After the suicide attempt in Call Your Mom, the narrator seeks help, which is when Growing Sideways and No Complaints take place.

Some time passes, and the subject and narrator have not remained in contact. The narrator gets drunk and tries to leave Strafford in Paul Revere and View Between Villages, which is unsuccessful and results in them getting arrested, and they use their one phone call as a chance to reach out to the subject during Dial Drunk. The subject misses that call, but they return it, which is when She Calls Me Back takes place.

More time passes and the subject returns to Strafford. The two of them catch up, and it goes well during Northern Attitude, Strawberry Wine and Homesick, until the narrator asks why they left. This, combined with the narrator's apparent distaste for the subject’s new outlook on life in New Perspective, results in the argument detailed during Orange Juice. They stay away from each other before the subject is about to leave again, this time for good. They reminisce more during All My Love and, and, in You’re Gonna Go Far, the narrator reminds the subject that they, and the whole of Strafford, will be waiting for them.
