He was all by himself, nine year old Samuel Braddock is spending recess sitting alone at the playground tables. It had been almost two months since losing his sister in the tragic car accidents. For him it seems wrong to enjoy a nice day to play because she is no longer here. Many of his classmates and friends have been avoiding him treating his sad mood like the chicken pox.
"Excuse me, are you feeling okay?"
Sam looks up to the direction of the voice and sees a little girl with large thick glasses and two dark chocolate pigtails. He knows her from his home room, Emily Wilson, the only seven year old in his fourth grade class. Everyone calls her 'Baby Einstein', 'Diaper Genius' all of Sam's classmates enjoy calling out those names and ignoring her when she walks toward them.
Sam stares for a long time before he finally open up his mouth, "I'm okay" then goes back to looking at nothing. Emily leans in closer and spoke up again. "Is it okay if I sit here and read my book?" Sam just nodded and Emily settles herself to the opposite side of the table, opening her book that weighs about as much as her. Sam continues to ignore her until he finally gotten bored of his pointless view and shift to the little girl across from him.
"What are you reading?"
"War and Peace" Emily replied without looking up, then she turns the page. Sam raises his eyebrows
"You don't read Curious George or The Very Hungry Caterpillar"
"I read those when I was three, this month I've been focusing on the Russian writers"
All he did was look at her bewilder, he knew that she has to be smart enough to skip two whole grades. Now to see her reading a big book with nothing but words, the type of Literature that few adults will read for pleasure.
"Why do you wanted to sit here Emily" Sam asked
Emily looks up from her book, "You know my name"
"Yeah, we are in the same classes"
"Oh, I thought you remember me from the Military based, my dad is a General in the Computer Engineering Department."
Sam could not believe that he never notice that Emily was a Army brat too, Emily continue talking " I am sorry about your sister"
"You know that too?"
"My family and I went to the funeral service and the Wake. You spend the whole time standing by yourself or sitting on the staircase."
"Oh" after getting over the feeling of being clueless for not realizing it much earlier, "Are you sitting here because your dad told you to become my friend now?"
"I am here because this is one of my favorite places to read, it usually quiet" Sam nods his head, of course not everything is about him "But if you will like to be friends I am open for it unless you don't want your current friends making fun of you as well then that's okay."
For five minutes Sam look out at the baseball field and he can see all of his buddies playing without him. When the recess bell rings neither one of them have even tried to ask him if he wanted to play with them.
"Hey Emily, what is your book about?"
This had led to a 20 year friendship, built on support and loyalty that withstands the pressures of college and military life.
