Riley

The alarm clock rang.

I groaned.

First day of my last year in Roastville High.

I pushed the covers and fumbled my eyeglasses on the top of my bedside drawer. I checked my phone for messages out of habit even though I already knew that I won't get any because only about five people knew my number. However, there was surprisingly a text from Allison.

Morning, R! I've got an errand to run to so i wont be at school until lunch so is it okay if you can get my schedule?

I quickly typed something along the lines of "yeah, sure" then got up to shower.

After minutes of bathing and brushing my teeth, I grabbed a pair of jeans and a shirt that lies just above my hips and wore my sandals.

I combed my hair that went above my waist and slipped on my black rimmed glasses. My eyes automatically zeroed in a small container of clear contact lenses which my mom bought for me. She was asking me to wear those instead of my eyeglasses but I never listened.

I mean, why wear contact lenses and spend about fifteen minutes to put them in place just to see clearly when you can just slip your eyeglasses in your eyes in mere seconds?

Sometimes, I just don't understand the world.

"Good morning." I found my parents sitting around the dining table with coffee and toasts in the table. My mom was busy in her laptop while my Dad was reading the morning newspaper.

Mom was the first one to look up. "Hi honey. Come join us," she said but not long after adding, "I see you're still not getting rid of your glasses."

I pulled on a chair across her, pretending not to hear her because arguing with her was not that way I wanted my morning to start instead I helped myself a toast and a bacon.

"So first day, huh," Dad chuckled, putting down the newspaper he was engrossed on.

"Yeah, finally. Just a year and I'll be going to Princeton," I smiled brightly.

Princeton. My dream school. I worked so hard to keep my straight A's that will guarantee me a place in batch 2019. Now, one more year and all I needed to do is to keep going, ace my tests, keep out of trouble, graduate with honors and I will be on my way to New Jersey.

Even the thought of walking through its halls made me feel so excited.

"Ah, that's my girl," Dad said proudly.

"Our girl," Mom corrected his husband, resting her chin in her hands looking equally proud.

A sense of warmth made its way to me and I was so happy that I was making my parents proud.

When they first heard that I wanted to study in Princeton, they were on full support. They went gushing how beautiful and grand the institution was and how my future was already guaranteed to be bright. They were asking me about my grades from time to time to make sure that my grades would be good enough for my application. They even went a bit overboard when they drive all the way to New Jersey just to check the university dormitories. Talk about overreacting but I didn't object, so the least I could do is to not disappoint them.

I checked my watch and saw that I had ten minutes before homeroom so I grabbed my bag, kissed my parents good bye, and drove to school.

Ashton

The alarm clock rang.

For probably like the tenth time already because Mom barged into the room and half yelled, "Ashton! Get up, you'll be late in school."

I groaned and buried my head under the people.

"Ashton," Mom warningly, pulling the duvet from my body.

"Mom," I groaned. "It's like the crack of the dawn."

"Honey, you have, like twenty to get ready," Mom said like we were discussing some health tips she was currently researching on.

My eyes snapped open. I only had twenty minutes to make it to first class? Coach wouldn't tolerate his players for being late on the first day.

"I want you in breakfast in five. Now get your butt in the shower. Go!" She ordered, drawing out the curtains making me wince into the sunlight.

I groaned, getting up and rubbing up my eyes and started to get in the shower.

After five minutes of a quick shower, putting on jeans and a shirt along with my varsity jacket, I was now sitting across Mom and Dad, devouring sunny side up eggs and waffles.

"Manners, Ashton," Mom reprimanded, delicately sipping her own coffee.

"So, son. Any updates about the season?"

"Yeah," I started, clearing my throat, swallowing the rest of my food and wiping my mouth. "The season's gonna start off any day now. Coach been slaying us off during the summer. He's really determined to have our 3 peat this year"

He nodded, absorbing what I said while downing a glass of water. "Well, good. Are their any college scoutsboresent in your games?"

And now that stopped me.

UCLA.

Football.

College.

"Uhh yeah, but I think they'd be present in the finals so we really have to have this one on our hands."

UCLA. Where I am destined to be. I just have to put my grades up enough not to be kicked out of the team, stay on track, slay our games and I'm off to UCLA.

Just thinking about playing on the university's field has my blood pumping excitedly.

"Ashton, are you taking the food suplements I bought you?" Mom asked, talking about the gigantic bottles of capsules she bought somewhere.

"Yeah, yeah," I replied just to shush her even if I really don't. "I'll go now. See you later, Mom, Dad. I might be late for practice so don't wait for me in dinner."

With that, I got up, looked for my keys and drove to school.
