The door swung open, and Daddy walked in. He was a strong prince, and handsome. But he could be scary too, when he wanted to be, and it was especially easy for him to make Karin scared because he was twice as big as her. But at the same time, she knew he loved her because he said it almost every time he got the chance. She was his little Princess, and like Birthday had said, if she was doing something for him, he wouldn't worry about her making a little mess.

"Hiya Daddy," she grinned, trying not to let him see just how nervous she was as the door opened. "I'm making you a cake! It's going to be a big surprise!"

"Oh, wow," he paused for a second, and then gave her a big smile, "I shouldn't have seen it, then. I've just got to check on something in the oven, that's a surprise too. How about I don't look at what you're doing, and you promise not to look in the oven?" Karin nodded enthusiastically.

"That's great then," Daddy said, peering through the little crack at the side of the over door as he opened it the tiniest fraction. The smell of baking flooded out into the room, and just then it took all of Karin's self control not to try and get a closer look. It smelled delicious. "I know you'll be surprised anyway. You'll be too excited to remember anything about what you expect for the party when it comes up. Are you sure you don't need any help?"

"Nope," Karin shook her head, "Birthday's worked out how to make a cake without using the cooker! It's called a fridge cake!"

"Oh, now that sounds awesome. Why don't you show me how to do it some time? But I've got an idea, too. See, I was making a cake with three different layers, like a traffic light. Green, orange, and pink. It's taking a very long time, though. So if you're making a cake as well, maybe we could use yours as the top layer of your birthday cake. It could be a surprise to both of us, even if we both helped to make it. Does that sound fun?"

Karin stopped to think for a minute, and then for another minute afterwards. That did sound like a pretty awesome idea, but she had been thinking about making cakes a surprise for Daddy and for all their other friends. She wasn't sure if she wanted to change her mind at the last minute. It would be so fun, after all, to work together on something that would be a big surprise for everyone.

"Well..." she started ...
