He stepped into the cold, wet forest, suppressing the fear and anxiety that tried to shape itself into a steel ball in his throat. It wasn't as though he was afraid of the dark, in fact, he welcomed it. The darkness gave him peace. It wasn't the Unknown that slept here either, he was confident in his training, his skills, and in himself. No, it was the fear that came from knowing what would happen after it was all over. It was the fear that it would be all over. He had come so far and experienced so much, that the thought of everything coming to an end was enough to cause that steel ball to rise up in his throat. He swallowed. He silently vowed to himself that he would savor every last second until there were none left.
The Unknown crept slowly beside the path, and although it was still thirty some feet away, he could feel its rotten breath like a sharp knife, slicing into his nostrils and pouring acid into his lungs with every inhale. He did not fear it. He was a Wolfson, and fear was weakness. All Wolfsons knew this. He ran his tongue across the tips of his incisors as they elongated and sharpened to a point. He salivated, knowing the battle was about to begin. He knew that doom would come to any that opposed him in this moment. This is the time when the power of his ancestors surged through his every bone and muscle, this was the Rheigne of the Wolfson.
He chuckled under his breath, wondering if the Unknown thought that it was doing the stalking. He readied his senses. He could almost feel the black blood of the darkness from inside the Unknown on his teeth. It was time to end it.
Just as the Unknown paused and lowered itself to spring upon him, he attacked, surprising it. He tore into the inky darkness of its foggy mist, the last light in the Unknown's body the only thing keeping it alive. Just as he was about to end it, to kill it, to win this final battle, something slammed into his head knocking him to the ground. Dizzy, he attempted to scramble to one knee but was unable to regain his full senses, and darkness crept into his eyes. It was too late, the battle was over, and as the dark took him, he was completely aware that he had not won. The last thing he saw as he fell, was the night sky above him, and the roots closing in over his face, trapping him.
