Prologue

Nikki's POV

*Beep* * Beep* *Beep*

I slowly opened my eyes as I shut off my alarm. It was only 8am. I sat up on my bed and looked out the window of my bedroom, then looking around my room. There were boxes stacked everywhere. I was confused when all the memories of the past couple of weeks suddenly came to me. I had just finished high school 2 weeks ago, and I found out that I got accepted to AU (Ashbourne University), my dream
college last week. My mum rushed in the room precisely at 8:30. She
just stood there in the door frame. I looked at her and tears started
to fall from her eyes.

"I can't believe my little girl is all grown up. It felt like just yesterday I saw you take your first steps, and when you said your first words. And now, You going off to college!" She sat down next to me on my bed and hugged me. She held me so tight like she didn't want to let go.

"Mum stop crying, or I'll start crying."

"I'm sorry honey, it's just...it's just that you've grown up so quickly. I just don't know how much longer I will have my baby girl" she said pulling away looking into my eyes. Her eyes were so red and
puffy from crying.

"I'll always be your little girl." Right then and there I started to cry, pulling my mom back into a long hug. We pulled away looking at the time. It was now only 9. My mum walked out of the room wiping away her tears. I got out of bed, changed into some comfortable
clothes, and made sure I packed everything I needed.

"Nikki breakfast is ready." Mum yelled. As if on cue, my stomach growled. I like ran down the steps, trying not to trip. Thankfully I didn't, but I did trip trying to get onto my chair to eat. A plate
was placed in front of me as I sat down. Mum had made pancakes, bacon
and eggs, which I ate rather quickly because the movers would be here
any minute to pick up my things. I sat there making small talk with
my mother until the doorbell rang. I sprinted to open the door as my
mom had tears streaming out of her eyes again. I showed the movers
where my room was so they could take the boxes to the car. I walked
back onto the kitchen and swallowed my mum into another hug. It felt
like we stood there for only a couple seconds when one of the movers
coughed to get our attention.

"Is there something wrong?" I asked the guy that stood there.

"No, nothing's wrong. I just wanted to let you know that everything is in the truck." He replied

"Oh, thank you. I'll be right out."

He walked out of the house as my mother and I followed. I looked at my
mum when we stepped on the front porch. She looked as if all of her
life was sucked out of her. She looked fragile. She hasn't looked this bad since dad died. She pulled me into a hug with a grip that showed that she didn't want to let go.

"I promise I will visit on our breaks and holidays." That is pretty much all I could say.

"I just don't want to lose you. I can't lose you too" she cried into my shoulder. I pulled back and stared at her.

"Hey, look at me." She ignored me. I said it again as I put my index finger under her chin and made her look at me. Her eyes were really red and puffy. "You are not going to lose me. I can promise you that. I am and always will be your little girl. Please be strong for me." She shook her head in reassurance and we pulled into one
last hug. The hug seemed like hours until we finally pulled away. I walked down the porch steps and down the driveway to my car that I got for my 16th birthday. Before I opened the door, I looked up at my childhood house. No matter where I go, this place I will always call home.

My thoughts were interrupted when my mum called my name. My gaze went directly towards her, and looked at her for a couple of minutes, until she broke the silence.

"I love you Nikki" she yelled

"I love you to mum" I replied. I took one more look at the house then got into my car, and drove down the driveway. When I was in the middle if the street I looked at my mum one last time before I drove away.
