"I thought you were dead," Eva whispered, not looking at her boyfriend.
Zach tilted her chin upwards so that he could see her face. "We don't have to talk about it right now, love."
Eva nodded but still looked troubled.
"Unless you need to," Zach added gently, not wanting to upset her.
She shook her head, and he watched her walls click back into place.
"Hey," he murmured, brushing a thumb over her cheek. "I'm here. You can talk to me or not, but I am here."
Eva chewed on her lower lip, thinking. "I... I thought..." she cut herself off. "Never mind."
"It's alright, Evie," Zach encouraged. "Talk to me."
"I thought I lost you forever." Eva started again. "And it killed me, Z. I had to picture my life without you in it, and I hated every imagined moment. It hurt."
He kissed the crown of her head. "I'm okay, Evie. We're okay."
"But not safe."
"Not yet, but we will be."
"How do you know that?"
"Because I can't imagine any other possibility."
She smiled softly. "I love you, Zach."
"I love you, Evie." he rested his cheek against her head. "Get some sleep, love."
