It was a beautiful day out. Still a little chilly, but not so much that you needed something more than a light jacket. Yoongi had taken to wearing his--your--leather jacket again when he went out. You didn't mind. He looked better in it than you did, anyway. You were taking advantage of the nice weather, relaxing at one of the outdoor tables at Sage and Khai's cafe.
Across the table from you, Yoongi sipped on an iced Americano. He said nothing, but you could tell he was content. He absently watched a bird pick at some crumbs on a nearby table, his ears flicking between the bird and the videos that auto-played as you scrolled through your phone.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw his tail twitch as he reached for his coffee with his left hand and winced in pain, switching to his right arm instead. The change in the weather had brought an ache to his damaged shoulder. You had thought it had started to feel better, but the pain had come back that morning stronger than before.
"How's it feeling?" you asked quietly, barely looking up from your social media feed.
"It's nothing I can't handle."
"You should go to Dr. Jung."
"I'm fine."
"Yoongi." You looked up then, your eyes meeting his copper ones sternly. "At the very least, he could give you some painkillers or something."
He sighed, his tail swishing in annoyance behind him. "It's really not that bad. But if it gets worse, I'll get you to make me an appointment."
You stared at him for a moment, your eyes narrowing in a challenge. He returned your gaze playfully, scrunching up his nose as your stare-down continued. Two plates clattering on the table between you brought you out of your silent battle.
"Club sandwich. Salmon filet, no lemon." Khai's hand landed on your shoulder. "Let me know if you guys need anything else. It's on the house."
You made a face, confused. "What? Why?"
"It's the one-year anniversary of our partnership!" His tone was plain, and it made you feel a little dumb for forgetting.
Thinking back, the past year had flown by so fast, it was hard to believe it was April again. But at the same time, so much had happened, it felt like last April was a million years ago.
"And what a partnership it's been." You smiled widely at him, and he returned it, sandy tail curling and uncurling happily around his waist.
"I'll let you guys get back to your meals." Khai patted your shoulder once before turning and walking over to check on some of the other customers on the patio.
You and Yoongi talked quietly as you ate. You were still a little surprised at how easy things were with him. Maybe it was the fact that over the past six months, the two of you had spent so much time together. Maybe it was the fact that you had sat through nearly every therapy session to support him. Whatever it was, you liked the closeness. It was comfortable.
After a small lull in the conversation, he hummed, chewing his mouthful of salmon quickly so he could speak. "Can we stop at the store on the way home? I need shampoo."
You nodded, handing him a piece of bacon that had fallen off your sandwich. "Yeah, of course."
Khai insisted on bringing you a piece of cake after you finished with your meal. The slice of carrot cake was huge, and you made Yoongi split it with you so it didn't go to waste. Just as he said, neither Khai nor Sage let you pay for the meal, insisting it was the least they could do for all the last-minute graphics requests you had fulfilled for them over the past year. And honestly, you couldn't argue with that.
