No one knew where they came from, who or what made them, or how they came into existence. All that was known was that everyone received something called a "Hex" on their seventh birthday. These Hexes were not physical in nature, but they affected the people that got them. Some of them had an effect on the person's body, others affected them more psychologically. Some hindered and hurt their users, others helped them, and others still had no effects that were readily noticeable. It was a whole spectrum of Hexes. And there was a whole ranking system for them as well. There were ways of suppressing, amplifying, and transferring Hexes, which allowed some sense of control among the people. But many things remained unknown about them.
