You're not afraid of new love, you're afraid of old pain.
________________________________I wake up the next morning, groggy and disoriented. My phone is dead, so I plug it into the charger, rub my eyes, and push myself out of bed. I slip into some comfy clothes, quickly do my makeup, throw my hair into a messy bun, and brush my teeth. As I'm about to head out of my room, I catch sight of Sam and Owen sprawled naked on the couch. My eyes widen, and I slam the door shut.
"Sam! GET OFF THE COUCH! THAT'S DISGUSTING!"
Sam jumps, and I hear him yell, "OMG! Chill, it's not that deep. You can come out here; we're not shy."
"Sam, seriously! Just cover yourselves!"
"Fine!"
They scramble to cover up, and I reluctantly open the door a crack.
"You two better clean that sofa thoroughly!" I say, trying to keep my disgust in check but failing to hide my amusement.
"Well, I heard a male voice from your room too," Sam retorts with a grin.
"And? I didn't... you know, get loud or anything!"
I can't help but laugh, and Sam rolls his eyes.
"Who is he?" he asks.
"Nobody! Just a... friend."
I head into the kitchen, trying to ignore the awkwardness, and start making some oatmeal.
"Please, it didn't sound like 'just' a friend..."
"I don't know what you're talking about!"
Sam starts imitating my conversation with Harry from last night.
"'Don't say that! Haha.' 'Look away! I'm changing!' 'It's fine, I've seen everything anyway! Haha.' 'I loved hanging out with you tonight! You're like the funniest person I know... don't tell Niall! Haha.' 'Should we do something tomorrow? I could show you my favorite spots in London.'"
"Stop! He really is just a friend."
Sam comes over and sits on one of the barstools, his expression turning serious.
"On a serious note, don't dive into something too quickly. You just got out of a relationship, and it's probably still weighing on you."
I look down, feeling the sting of his words.
"It does, but I have to move on. I need to learn to trust people again. I can't stay stuck in the past. I appreciate you looking out for me, but we're really just friends."
"For now. But seriously, if anything comes up, you can always talk to me."
"I will."
I smile and give him a quick hug. My phone dings, and I rush back to my room to check it. It's a message from Niall.
"I need to go, but I love you and remember to clean the sofa!" I call out as I grab my purse, phone, and jacket.
I head out the door, my mind already racing through the day ahead.
