When Izuku got his quirk at 4 years old, few people understood it. They thought it was weak because, to them, it only worked in his sleep. Izuku, however, knew better. Ghostly haunting would make him stronger in time. After all, he wasn't the only one in his family that had held the quirk.

Although they had held it years ago, they still had notes on how it worked for them. The quirk would give its person the ability to haunt someone's life while they lived it in the past. Izuku's version of ghostly haunting let him follow around a boy his age named Tanjiro Kamado.

Tanjiro lived on a mountain, and his family sold coal for a living. However, something was going to happen in the future, Izuku's quirk told him that. After all, the other people that had been followed had something happen to change the haunted person's life to a major degree.

For now Izuku could enjoy the simple life of mining coal on a mountain top and learning a ritual dance performed at the end of the year. Things were peaceful in Izuku's ghostly quirk dreams for 2 and a half years when Tanjiro's father fell ill. Tanjiro was gifted the ceremonial dance items along with the hanafuda earrings that were a gift to the Kamados roughly 3 centuries before. Soon after Tanjiro took the earrings and ceremonial wear, did his father pass away into the afterlife.

Oddly enough Izuku woke after the earrings that had been passed to Tanjiro were also given to Izuku who woke up from the ghostly quirk of Tanjro's funeral wearing a pair of the earrings. It had spooked his mother as before that dream Izuku didn't have pierced ears. Going to school the morning after with the earrings in, clued those in his grade level that it was the work of his Ghostly hauntings quirk.

Returning to his sleep, he discovered that when Tanjiro was wearing his own set of Hanafuda earrings that he could see Izuku around the mountain. At first, he was confused because his sense of smell told him that the person he was seeing didn't exist. When Izuku walked through Tanjiro, it proved the point that he was only watching but with concentration on both parts from Izuku and Tanjiro he could help a little bit around the small mountain home. On the off time that Tanjiro and Izuku shared, Izuku explained why he was "haunting" Tanjiro and how his not so complicated but also stupidly complex quirk worked. If the person being haunted could see the person haunting them through different means it meant that Tanjiro had something to learn from Izuku and vice versa.

The learning curve for both parties started simple at first, then grew more complex the more time they spent together during free time. Izuku started teaching Tanjiro how to analyze things on the fly using the resources they shared. Tanjiro started to teach Izuku how to live on his own and cook for himself. Izuku taught Tanjiro what it ment to be a hero in hard times, while Tanjro started helping Izuku practice his forms in the Hinokami Kagura dance for new years. Once Izuku had mastered the dance he helped Tanjiro smooth out and perfect his own form.

By the time the next 2 years have passed, the boys have become as close as brothers. He trained harder on his own form of the kaugera, unintentionally dieling up his sense of hearing and his sence of smell to a peck above what they were. During the quirk work sessions in gym class he got higher then the rest when utializing the way of breathing used with the Hinokami Kagura dance he could see the people attacking him before they showed up.

More years past and the boys woud continue to grow on their own as well as together. By now they were both nearing the age of twelve years old. At this point in time, Izuku's green hair was starting to turn black with dark burgendy highlights at the roots . His green curls were still prominent, but Izuku now knew that the big change in Tanjiro's life would be coming sooner rather than later. Most likely within the next year. The people at school noticed the change in his hair because people still used hair dye to change hair colors or went to a quirk run hair salon that was much higher price than most others. Izuku was made uncomfortable by the fact he had to explain that his own quirk was what changed his hair color for reasons still unknown to him.

As far as Izuku knew, his quirk would slowly change his features to match most of Tanjiro's the closer the life changing event would be. His hair was a stark change, but he grew used to it quickly; you had to, living in an era with quirks, after all.

A good example of learning new things and adapting quickly happened soon after his hair color's change. Izuku was walking home from school when he was attacked by a villain with a sludge quirk. It was quickly dispatched by All might. However, to Izuku something about All Might the hero he had admired since being a small child chilled Izuku to the bone. Compared to the normal people around school he interacted with occasionally something very important was off. He sounded different from the rest of the world and Izuku didn't like that at all. Izuku of course knew better than to ask, as even knowing some of the things he did put him at risk.

Once at home, Izuku first got in the shower to get rid of the feeling of being covered in absolute filth before going to bed to inform Tanjiro of the attack as well of the next warning that change was coming to Izuku and Tanjiro's somewhat peaceful life. However when he fell asleep he was warned not to tell Tanjiro of the coming changes in their live by Tanjiro's father. Izuku knew and Tanjiro both knew the change was getting closer because when Izuku first appeared to Tanjiro, Nezuko saw him appear out of seemingly thin air and asked Tanjiro who was standing next to him.
