Sunghoon stepped into the lecture hall, eyes scanning the room, taking in the unfamiliar faces. As usual, he gravitated toward the back, settling into the last seat of the last row. The spot felt safe, distant from the bustling energy at the front.
He recalled his promise to Yeji: At least talk to one person. He sighed inwardly. He wasn't one to casually strike up conversations, especially with people he didn't know, but today felt different—he owed it to his sister to try.
As the bell rang, signaling the start of class, students hurried back to their seats. Just then, Sunghoon noticed a boy with brown-dyed hair walking towards him. The boy seemed absorbed in his phone, paying little attention to the others in the hall. He sat down beside Sunghoon and, to his surprise, quickly turned to flash him a warm smile.
"Hi! I'm Yang Jungwon. You can call me Wonnie if you want," the boy introduced himself enthusiastically. "I'm 19, born in Seoul but raised in Busan, and now I'm back here again. I hope we can be friends."
Sunghoon blinked, caught off guard by the boy's friendliness. There was a brief silence before Jungwon continued, noticing the quiet.
"Sorry if I'm coming off too excited," Jungwon said, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "I just moved here, and I really want to make new friends."
Something about Jungwon's energy was comforting—light and genuine. Sunghoon found himself smiling, a small warmth growing in his chest.
"Hi, I'm Sunghoon," he said, his voice soft but friendly. "I'm 19 too, and... I'm a figure skater."
Jungwon's eyes lit up instantly. "You're a figure skater? That's so cool! Can you show me someday?"
The excitement in Jungwon's voice was infectious, and Sunghoon couldn't help but chuckle. It had been so long since anyone showed this much interest in him. He hadn't realized how much he craved it.
Sunghoon gave a warm, genuine smile—the first in what felt like forever. "Sure. I'd love to."
Jungwon beamed, his dimples showing as he grinned widely. "You're the best, Sunghoon!"
Sunghoon, feeling an unfamiliar joy bubbling inside, reached out and playfully pinched Jungwon's cheeks. "You're too cute, you know that?"
"Ow! That hurts!" Jungwon protested, rubbing his cheeks with an exaggerated pout.
They both burst out laughing, the tension from before dissolving into the air. The conversation flowed effortlessly after that, and for the first time in a long while, Sunghoon felt truly happy.
He had made a friend—a real friend. And deep down, he knew this was just the beginning of something that would last forever.
