It was seven in the morning. Seven. In. The. Fucking. Morning. Yet, here I was curling my dark hair and applying my favorite mascara. I slipped into a pair of jeans and a black AC/DC sweatshirt since it was so cold. Just as I was tying my converse I heard Bella call from downstairs, "Kat we're gonna be late!".
I rolled my eyes and grabbed my bag before rushing downstairs. "You look nice Bells", I complimented trying to make casual conversation. "Thanks", she muttered before she slipped and fell on the ice outside.
"Careful. I went ahead and put some new tires on the truck for you", Charlie stated, helping Bella off the ground. I giggled at how clumsy my twin was, she was always managing to hurt herself somehow.
"Thanks dad, come on Bells before you break a bone," I laughed nudging her arm to get her moving since I really didn't want to be late on the first day.
We pulled into the parking lot of Forks High School and we're immediately greeted by a man complimenting our truck. Bella muttered thanks and I flashed a smile before we headed into school together. Now you must be thinking that I am so extroverted and don't have anxiety at all, but the truth is I just cover it very well, but even so as we entered the high school I couldn't help a small sinking feeling in my gut.
"You must be Katrina and Isabella Swan, I'm Eric head of the school paper and you're news baby front page!" Eric greeted. Bella clearly flustered replied with a stuttering, "no, no please I'm not—".
"Relax, no feature, but seriously whatever you need friend, your guide, shoulder to cry on," he continued, now walking with us. "Thanks Eric, but we're more the suffer in silence type, but thanks for the greeting", I smiled, leading Bella away from a situation that was clearly making her uncomfortable.
"I have first period English, so I won't see you, but we'll for sure sit together at lunch", I explained, giving her a small squeeze before heading out into the halls on my own.
Nobody else really greeted me, it seemed that many other students were more interested in their cliques than meeting the new girl, that was until a short dark-haired girl with a pixie vibe approached me. "Hi I'm Alice, it's nice to meet you! Do you happen to have English first period?" She questioned excitedly.
"Ha ha how'd you know," I grinned, "if you're going there as well it might be nice to know at least one person instead of being stared at".
"Well, I don't think I can stop the staring but I can definitely help you with the knowing someone part", she replied and together we chatted the entire way to our first period.
My first impression of Alice was that she was a very nice girl, and since she reminded me a lot of my former best friend, I could tell we could be good friends. After English, I met her adopted sister Rosalie and her boyfriend/adopted brother Emmet. Yes, I figured it was kind of weird to be dating your adopted brother, but they seemed pretty normal and kind. Even Rosalie the blonde who Alice had warned me about seemed to be very polite when meeting me.
When lunch rolled around, I went straight for the table my sister was seated at. "Hey Kat, this is Jessica, Mike, and Angela", Bella said, pointing at three new faces. "It's nice to meet you guys", I responded, taking a bite of my apple.
While I said that, the guy from the parking lot, who I came to know as Tyler, came up and planted a kiss right on Bella's cheek, causing. Mike to immediately chase him through the cafeteria. "Wow it's like kindergarten all over again, you guys are the shiny new toy", Jessica chuckled tightly.
I forced a smile and laughed nervously. Jessica didn't seem to be too fond of me for some reason, and she didn't give off the vibes of someone who I would befriend, but she did seem like the type of crowd Bella would run with, and I was just happy she was making friends and stepping out of her shell.
"Who are they?" Bella asked, staring at a group coming through the door. "Those are Mr. and Mrs. Cullens foster kids, they moved down here from Alaska a couple years ago", Jessica answered, "the gorgeous blonde that's Rosalie and she's dating the big dark-haired guy Emmet, which is so weird".
"Jess, they're not actually related," Angela chimed in. "Yeah, but it's weird I mean they live together," Jessica responded, "Dr. Cullen is like this foster dad/matchmaker. The strange dark-haired girl, that's Alice and the blonde guy next to hair is her biological brother Jasper, and luckily they're not dating because that would be borderline criminal."
"Who's that?" Bella quizzed as a guy with dark hair walked in last on his own.
Jessica looked before leaning in and whispering, "that is Edward Cullen, insanely gorgeous, but apparently none of the girls here are good enough for him. Seriously, don't waste your time"."I wasn't planning on it," Bella stuttered as she took a second look back at him. I could tell she wasn't being fully honest with herself, and I was happy not only that she was talking to people, but that she might also have a little crush on one herself. The blonde kid Jasper was more my type, and when I turned my head, I could have sworn I saw him looking my way for a split second. He was utterly beautiful, but then again so was their entire family it seemed, and I knew that if I had the chance I would like to get to know not just him, but all of them better.
"Honestly they don't seem that weird to me, I mean sure the adoptive siblings dating thing might be kind of strange for us, but they're not related, and I guess if it makes them happy it's none of my business", I added standing up for them, especially since I had met them earlier and they all seemed to be incredibly polite people.
"Are you kidding me", Jessica scoffed, looking at me in disbelief. Whether it was because I stood up for them or whether it was because she couldn't believe I didn't find their situation weird I didn't know, but what I did know was that they were probably far more entertaining than her. The bell rang and I immediately dropped my tray off for the lunch ladies and headed to history. I had a vague memory of Alice telling me one of her family members was in this class, but it slipped my mind who it was. When I walked in though I instantly knew.
"Ah, Ms. Swan I'm glad you found your way here alright," the teacher remarked as he signed my slip stating I attended all of my classes, "you can have a seat next to Jasper. Jasper, could you raise your hand please".
The attractive blonde boy I had seen in the lunchroom prior raised his hand and I made my way next to him at the table. "Hello, I'm Jasper," he introduced tightly. I'm not sure what it was, but he looked almost pained by my presence.
"Hey, I'm Katrina, but most people just call me Kat. I'm sorry he sat me here I don't imagine you're too fond of suddenly having to share space with someone else", I rambled, not knowing quite what to do in this situation.
"I can endure it", was all Jasper said as we began reading about slavery in the U.S. I wasn't quite sure what kind of response that was, but he kept glancing over at me with the same expression, kind of like he was in pain or struggling to fight some kind of hidden urge whatever it may be.
When the bell rang I was honestly relieved, I felt bad that Jasper seemed not to have liked me as much as his other siblings had, and it was kind of getting to me. All I knew was that if he kept seeming as bothered by my presence as much as it appeared, I would have to switch classes or seats or something, but then I decided that it would be my goal to make Jasper Hale my friend no matter what. I had never backed down from a challenge, and if he was as cool as Alice, Rosalie, and Emmet, then it would be a pleasure to try.
With a new goal in mind, I went about my day with an added confidence. It wouldn't be easy, but if I could just even get him to laugh at one of my ridiculous jokes it would make me feel better, and maybe even ease his discomfort. So, then it was decided, I would make Jasper Hale my friend by the end of the year.
