(A/N: I changed the date of which this takes place because I don't trust myself to make a good story that takes place in 1989, and I checked the calender and even in the original year it doesn't make sense to start school on sept 1st cuz it was a Friday. So yeah, enjoy.)
The bell rang loudly for lunch period to start at 10AM, the best period for the students of Westerburg High School in Sherwood, Ohio. A student there, a senior for that matter, had opened his locker to put away the books from his previous lesson before taking out his diary, in which he wrote with the extra pen he had set up in his locker.
“September 4th, 2023. Dear Diary,”____________________________
We take a look at our dear student. Green Sawyer. He has always been in the shadows, never noticed. However when he’d try standing up in the name of others, he’d become a target of bullying too for a short while until either a new one would arise or he’d become old news to the jackass students. He continued writing.
“I believe I'm a good person, y’know, I think there's good in everybody but here _
we are: First day of senior year! ______________________________________
And uh… I look around at these kids that I've known all my life and I ask myself: “What happened?””________________________________________________“Freak!”, “Slut!”, “Burn-out!”, “Bug-eyes!”, “Poser!”, “Moron!”.
Green shut his locker and passed by multiple groups calling each other names, which meant they were either friends joking with each other, kids who were trying to pick a fight for no reason, or actual bullying. Green put in one of his earphones and played a song he’s been working on since august.
“We were so tiny, happy and shiny,
Playing tag and getting chased.”“Freak!”, “Slut!”, “Loser!”, “Lard ass!”. His song was interrupted by another group –who all looked to be freshmen– swearing at each other. Green sighed as he’s seen all this before and half the time, the younger and new kids didn't even understand what some of those words meant. They just said them cause it sounded funny and wanted to seem cool to the juniors and seniors.
“Singing and clapping, laughing and napping,
Baking cookies, eating paste.”“Redneck”, “stuck-up”, “hunchback!” Green heard another group. He’s been going to Westerburg for his entire high school life, so nothing was ever different or surprising anymore at this point.
“Then we got bigger, that was the trigger
Like the Huns invading Rome!”Green bumped into somebody rushing through the crowd. “Oh!- Sorry!!” The girl immediately flipped him off and rolled her eyes so far back that he thought she’d gotten possessed by a demon just now.
“Welcome to my school, this ain't no high school
This is the thunder dome.
Hold your breath and count the days,
We're graduating soon.”Green watched as she walked off and some other girl in a red hoodie threw an empty can of soda in her head. “White trash!” The hoodie girl yelled before the two started screaming at each other in the middle of the hall. Green, unbothered, walked off to the cafeteria.
“College will be paradise if I'm not dead by June!”
Green started humming along to his song.
“But I know, I know life could be beautiful. I pray, I pray for a better way.
If we changed back then, we could change again!
We could be beautiful.”As Green enters the cafeteria, a boy gets shoved to the ground by a person wearing a red sports jacket with white sleeves.
“Just not today…” Green mumbles, adding onto the song upon seeing the boy fall. He walks to the kid and lends his hand to help him up.
