They had finally made it through the burned forests, walking up a hill. At this point, Dusk was exhausted, and was dragging his leg along with him. He laid down on the grassy hill, huffing as Silver looked beyond the hill, seeing a barn and a bridge and pure fresh trees and grass. She no longer smelt the smokey ash. She turned to Dusk, "Look! We are almost there!" she smiled joyfully, tilting her head for a split second to where the barn was.
"I'm too tired," Dusk muttered, weakly speaked as his body was becoming more frail and weak by the moment. He had been the runt, but was always healthy. Well, until now.
Silver's gaze softened, unsure what to do. She went over to Dusk, trying to help him up, "We need to continue. We are almost there," she said in a soft tone as Dusk stood onto his three paws, his leg dragging behind. She smiled softly, walking slowly.
She thought about her mom and sister. She wondered where they are now, and where's her father? She did watch him get trampled by deers, but it didn't look like he died. Her mother, on the other paw, was okay. Silver thought of where she went. Did she find a safe place for her and Solar? Or were they attacked? What if they caught on fire, or were trampled? She shook her head at the thoughts, silently crying as she remembered watching Dust burn in front of her eyes. If only he jumped into the water. But they were stuck in the middle of the log. Her salty tears dripped onto the ground as she walked. Dusk pressed himself against her, looking at her in the eyes. She wiped her tears, continuing to walk as she inhaled heavily.
Soon enough, they were at the barn. She slipped under the white gate, stretching afterwards. Her brother began to slip under, but fell.
"Are you okay?" Silver asked, looking at him, worried.
"It hurts..." Dusk whined, struggling to stay conscious. Silver widened her eyes, tears flowing down.
"Come on, you're strong- please, please don't die on me!" she tearfully said, rubbing her cheek against Dusk's soft head. She pulled him out from under the white fence, grabbing onto him and hugging him with tears streaming down her face, "Don't die on me! I- we- we already lost dad and mom! And..." She stuttered, "And Dust! You saw- even Solar! Please don't die!" She cried as Dusk weakly hugged her back, soon turning limp with a couple more breaths. She shook him lightly, trying to get him to wake, but instead he took one last breath, soon his whole body slowly shutting down. His lungs, his brain, and eventually, his heart.
She sobbed as she grabbed him, dragging him by the scruff. Feeling hungry and light headed, it was hard to focus. She found a nice spot behind the barn where slightly wet dirt was. Silver sobbed, whining as she pulled herself to dig. She lowered her chest, pushing dirt out of the way. She pulled away dirt till there was a hole good enough to place her younger brother in. She grabbed his cold, limp body, placing it into the dirt. She began to push dirt over him, her tears still dripping. She looked down at the dirt, which now had a bump as her brother's body laid under. She blinked, sighing and resting her head onto the dirt, wishing she could cuddle her family one more time. She passed out, everything going black.
