The car sped away from the haunting house, and the night air brought a sense of liberation. Samantha back glanced at me from the driver's seat, concern etched on her face. "You okay?"
I nodded, still catching my breath. Letting go of the past felt more than okay. "Thanks for being there, Sam."
"Always," she replied, her grip firm on the steering wheel. "Don't worry, We're leaving that nightmare behind."
As we cruised into the night, I pondered how to confront what had happened in the house. That man had tried to rape me; letting a criminal like him escape such heinous acts wasn't an option.
'What if he succeeded? More importantly, what if he tries to pull something like this again in the future?' My brows furrowed into a frown.' Can't I just report him?'
'No!' I immediately shook my head, discarding the idea. My mother would be devastated if her lover turned out to be a rapist, and, worst of all, her heart disease might get even worse.
'Then what should I do?' I clicked my tongue in frustration.
"Hey?" Sam's reached my ears, bringing me out of my stupor. I looked up and realized it was a red light.
"Drink. It'll make you feel better," Samantha said, handing me a water bottle.
My heart softened at my friend's kind gesture. "Sam, I don't know what I would have done if it weren't for you," I was more than grateful for her presence in my life.
My friend chuckled slightly. "You would have done just fine, Sera. I know it."
I shook my head in disagreement. I probably wouldn't even be here if it weren't for her. After my father's first attempt to force himself on me, I was at my lowest point in life. My mother was out of town for a month. I had no one to turn to... except my best friend.
When I told Samantha what had happened, she immediately insisted I live with her.
'No, she said I have to live with her,' I chuckled inwardly. She was so angry at that time that she even suggested poisoning my stepfather. I still remember that evil yet cute expression on her face. We truly were kids at that time.
"But now... things are different," I murmured.
The city lights blurred as my thoughts focused on the unresolved turmoil.
"Different, indeed," Sam remarked, her eyes reflecting the weight of shared memories. "You're stronger now, Sera. We both are."
'Eh? Did she hear me?' I blinked in surprise. But agreed nonetheless. We weren't kids anymore.
Approaching the outskirts of the city, I grappled with the decision on how to handle the darkness within my family. Seeking justice seemed daunting, but letting the perpetrator roam free was equally unsettling.
"So, did he force himself on you again?" Samantha asked suddenly. She didn't look back, keeping her focus ahead. However, I could sense the darkness in her tone.
I remained silent. I just didn't know what to say.
"No need to answer. Your silence says it all," she muttered, still looking forward.
"Sam, what do you think I should do?" I sighed, uncertainty threading my voice.
She finally glanced back at me, her expression twisting into a growl. "I think we should just murder that bastard once and for all"
"Samantha!" My eyes rolled back subconsciously.
"Ok ok," She shrugged. "Sera, you have to do what's right for you. Reporting it might bring justice, but it's your choice. In the end, whatever your decision may be, we'll face whatever comes together."
