Their feet thundered the ground as they ran along the field. A wide open space, sparse with trees, but full of wildflowers and grass that went up to about their ankles. The wind blew their hair back as they ran, not even daring to look back. Noelle thought it was ironic. It sounded like a movie, or the cover of a Lana Del Ray album. Lana Del Ray, oh how she'd kill to just have a song of hers play. She had all of her stuff back at her former home, and she could never get it back now. Another bad thing. And another, another bad thing. Her shoe just fell off. And down she goes.
She fell straight on her face, her nose definitely taking some damage. Someone who was absolutely not Maple let out a peal of crowing laughter from their perch in the dense grass. Noelle couldn't see what they looked like, but considering the fact that they made no move to attack or chase the pair of them, they were probably friendly, or at the very least non-hostile.
"Jay, you idiot, they could be hostile!" A new voice hissed from the same patch of tall grass. The first voice- Jay, apparently- did not shut up.
Noelle groaned and slowly got up, looking at the scene before her eyes. Maple had pulled a switchblade and was kicking Noelle's shoulder. Noelle rolled over and got up, rubbing her face. Blood dripped down her nose as he stood back up, quickly recovering and looking at who she assumed to be Jay, and the other she didn't know.
Jay was a rather scrawny-looking teenager with pointed canine ears sticking out of his wild mess of dark gray hair and wearing a light blue grass-stained hoodie. The other person was taller, wearing a dark purple hoodie and a rabbit mask, with shoulder-length fluffy black hair. She was shaking Jay by the shoulders, yelling incomprehensibly about wild animals.
"Oh, hey, one of em's got a knife now," Jay idly commented, prompting the other to shake him hard enough that if you listened carefully, you could hear his brains rattling around. Maple squinted at them and slowly lowered the weapon, and motioned to Bunny first, then Jay.
"I'm going to assume that you're Bunny, and you're Jay. Considering the mask and.. you not being Bunny. I've heard of you."
"...Since when were we famous??" Bunny said, pausing in her violent shaking of Jay.
"You aren't. I just have a friend. The guy up the road, big red barn and cornfield. You know him. Is he home?"
"Uhhhhhh," Jay eloquently said, squinting in Maple's general direction, "There are like, five people who live in massive red barns in this area, you're gonna hafta be more specific."
Noelle looked past Bunny and Jay, examining the fields.
"Fine. Orange hair, red bandana, wears clothes that makes him look like a traffic light. The one near Horalds Stream."
"I don't know his name, but we call him Carrot Face. I don't like him." Bunny said, lightly setting Jay back down on the ground like a wet kitten.
Noelle snickered at the nickname.
Maple frowned. "That happens to be my brother. Thank you very much."
Noelle rolled her eyes.
"You have like, over 20 brothers."
"You have over a hundred! Quite literally!"
"Fair game."
Maple sighed. "Back to the question. Is he home?"
Bunny shrugged. "Probably, I don't check up on him very often."
